discussing the bolts attaching the front leaf spring mounts in a C1. I was under my car today, and the original bolts on mine are clearly "grade 5", with the 3 lines indicating grade 5 very clearly. There is a headmark in the center, which is a small circle with a small letter in the center. Can't quite make out the letter, which is filled with (original) chassis paint. I guess I'll know what the letter is when I replace the spring liners this spring. My point is, some of the discussion in the "lost thread" seemed to indicate this was supposed to be a plain head grade 2 bolt, but in the summer of '55 is was definately a headmarked grade 5.
I saw a C1 suspension thread a while back...

You 'da man! I have another "bolt" problem...
The rad support to rad, pop-ups, hood hinge to rad support, and hood hinge to hood bolts on my (July) '55 are clearly NOT the originals. In my travels scrounging/buying these items, what "could" they look like? You know, with or without integral serrated washer, headmark "TR" "UR" "E", "R", plain, or what? I know there can be some variety- the sway bar-to-frame bolts (never touched originals) are plain, except ONE is marked "WB1C". So I have some variation on the car! I'm just trying to find out what is "possible".- Top

Re: I saw a C1 suspension thread a while back...
On my June '57 car the heads are also plain, and the lower pair on each side is slightly longer than the upper pair, as the lowers go through two thicknesses of frame bracket material. The A.I.M. (and Noland's book, page 121) calls out GM #100025 for the uppers and #100026 for the lowers; I don't have a Fastener Standards Manual, so I don't know what those two numbers are supposed to be - maybe Joe has a reference to identify them.- Top
