Is the hood hinge finish black? I thought I read somewhere that one surface was black and the other was unfinished. Which is which? I'm about to reinstall my hood and I would like it correct.

Re: Hood Hinge Finish
Ralph, The hinges are cad plated, but in place when the car is painted. Therefore the flat plane facing to the outside gets body paint. After the car is painted the motor compartment is blacked out and the hinge pieces facing the engine, to the rear, get black-out.- Top

Re: Hood Hinge Finish
Thanks, now I'm confused? I hope I understand this correctly. Looking at the engine compartment, the hinges would appear to be black. The flat back sides which attach to the hood would be either Cad or painted the same color as the car finish. Why not just paint the entire hinge black. Now another question. What about the bolts. Are the bolts in the engine compartment black and the bolts which attach to the hood cad?- Top

Re: Hood Hinge Finish
Ralph,
-------It sounds a little like you may be missing the point. The hinges were not painted either body color or black. They were oversprayed body color and black. There is a difference. There is almost always some bare cad-plating still in evidence. The hinges just happened to be in place at the time of painting. No one on the assembly line took the time to make sure that the hinges were carefully painted.Ive seen instances on original cars where the painter missed one of the hinges and the surrounding area completely with the black and only a little body color was in evidence.Every car was different. Also, since the hinge-bolts were in place they were painted with what ever color happened to overspray against them as well.Hope this helps...........Bill S- Top

Re: Hood Hinge Finish
Ralph:
Is your intention to recreate an original 1967 Corvette to possible Duntov Mark Of Excellence standards. In your original query, you wanted to know the color of the hood hinges. Before installation, they were cadmium plated (nowadays, zinc is an acceptable substitute, because the chemicals required for cadmium plating are highly toxic). The hood was in place (including hinges and bolts) during the body painting, and subsequent blackout process, therefore, considering the shoddy workmanship that took place in those days, the hinges could CONCIEVABLY be any combination of cadmium (zinc), body color, and "blackout", although, for judging purposes, if they are entirely blacked out, that is perfectly acceptable.
As far as "blackout" paint products are concerned, many people will have many different preferences. I have had good luck with the Eastwood product(of which I used 1 quart, thinned 1:1 with lacquer thinner, to black out the engine bay, under hood, and wheelhouses), which is an acrylic lacquer, like the original, which dries quickly and provides the desired semigloss luster.
Good luck,

Re: John Deere Blitz Black
Dale:
We all have our preferences, and I must respect yours, never having tried it.
I use the "underhood black" in quarts, and thin it 1:1 with thinner. I am sure John Deere's "blitz black" is a excellent product, although I am completely satisfied with the "underhood black". Maybe we should compare notes further "off the boards".
Sincerely,

Re: John Deere Blitz Black
Dale:
I use Eastwood's "Underhood Black". It comes in spray cans as well as quarts, and dries to a fairly glossy "semigloss". I suppose if you prefer a flatter finish, you can finish up with a mist coat. I spray 4 wet coats, and that works well. The product is an acrylic lacquer, and so dries quickly.
