    Dittos to Dale....

2" full-tube headers, "rumpy-rump" cam, open plenum high rise, and 1k cfm carb will pull great numbers on a dyno, and even wow the spectators at the strip, BUT; These levels are achieved at 5-6-7k rpm, so unless you are running 5.56:1 rear you won't see this rpm range much on the street. A stone-stock 2V smallblock makes more real-world power at stoplights than a LT1, for maybe the first 30 feet. I have seen the dyno sheets showing the power LOSS at 1500 rpm after the installation of headers. Engines which often see up to 5k would benefit from "tri-Y" type headers, but full-tube headers are actually a detriment in traffic power ranges. Save the headers for your weekend racer, run clean, deburred, port-matched manifolds on your driver or classic 'Vette.

      My Kingdom For A Set

of 1962 tri-Y headers!..........Awesome on the street!........Also, a little bit of deliberate mis-matching at the cylinder head exhaust ports will help in the anti-reversion department!

          Re: Exhaust pipe diameter

I appreciate everyone's advice and comments regarding my question about '70 exhaust pipes. If I get any hard evidence that the larger diameter pipes improve my performance, will type a follow-up note.

I believe they were available in the days when these cars were hot-rodded. I think I had a set. One down side of the tri-Y is that they hung low. Curbs and bumps were worrisome. Keep an eye out. Everything comes up on EBay eventually.

                  That's The Problem

What's your definition of "performance". The industry regards performance as horsepower and high RPM peaked torque curves that are a PIA on the street.

The entire aftermarket industry is built on buzz words such as performance and a general lack of understanding by the public. Why do the auto makers tout horsepower? The truck industry promotes torque in their advertising.

                      PS

How would you like a high performance vehicle that could go 300 MPH but it took an hour to reach that speed?

I like to go fast BUT I want to go fast quickly. The quickly part is where the torque and how well it's hooked to the ground comes into play.

Go fast more quickly and do it often is the key! That's what I define as performance.

                      Dale.

                          Re: Dittos to Dale....

What this all boils down to is that there are important and necessary differences between street engines and racing engines. Street engines, if they're going to be enjoyable to drive, require many considerations and a BALANCE between performance, driveability, LONG TERM durability and other factors. That's what GM engineers do when they validate a powertrain for PRODUCTION. Racing engines require only what's necessary to win the race. The new Chevy V-8 that will be running at Indianapolis this year will produce 750+ horsepower, but I sure wouldn't want one under the hood of my Corvette. It would be ABSOLUTELY no fun to drive, at all.

There are many facets of racing engines that can be incorporated to advantage into street engines. However, there are many more things that cannot. The trick is to recognize which can and which can't. That's what seperates the men from the boys.
