    MANUAL STEERING 72

Is the steering wheel supposed to turn about 1 1/2" before the wheel starts to turn? i just put a front suspension rebuild on it and the wheel still has play in it. This is the first manual steering car i have. Is there a way to take the play out of the steering wheel?
    Thanks Eric

Your steering box needs adjusting or rebuilding. also check the rag joint.

It's time to remove and overhaul the steering gear. Usually only a couple of seals and maybe a shim are needed for the job. The procedure is in your Chassis Overhaul Manual, and is something a good amateur restorer can do, but you will need a 50 inch-pound torque wrench to get the preloads set up properly.

Attempting to adjust out the lash by messing with the sector preload bolt with the box in the car will usually not do much good and too little lash can damage the gears. Also, the grease is likely dried out.

Take it off the car and do a proper overhaul. Then it will be good for the next 30 years.
