    Shifter arms problem

I have a 65 FI with a close ratio trans. It had a Hurst shifter when I got it many years ago. The time has come to put original linkage back in it. I ordered the shift arms from LI corvette and went to put them on. They won't go over the rectangular ears that stick out from the transmission?? The are the same shape and seem pretty close but just don't slip on. The other strange thing is the bolts that hold the arms on are 3/8 16 . They won't go through the hole in the arms to mount the shift levers. The old Hurst levers had an enlarged portion so the bolt could go through What am I missing??? Jerry

You have the wrong model transmission. I believe '69 Muncie's up started the use of 3/8-16 internal thread w/bolts. '63 thru '68 had external 5/16-18 w/nuts.

        Cover part # 3950306

Is this the correct part number for a 65 M21?

GM casting #3950306 is a 69 side cover. However, you need more than just the correct side cover to correct this problem. You also need the correct shifter shafts with the 5/16" studs. These were GM #3831709, but they were discontinued years ago. No reproductions that I know of are available and used ones are often scrap.
