    Spark plug wire dating

My car was built at the beginning of December, 1966. Am I correct in assuming that I need wires dated 3rd quarter 1966. I'm asking to make sure, since I know what happens when you ASSUME.

    Thanks! Brandon

I don't think it would be impossible

to have all 4th quarter wires (Oct.Nov. Dec.) or all 3rd quarter (Jul.Aug.Sept.)
but I believe many original sets have a mixture of two different date stamps.

        Agree!

My experience too looking at untouched scrap yard engines (mixed quarterly dates around the change of a calendar quarter). BUT, our 'friends' at Lectric Limited have taken NCRS judging rules (6-month interval) to their limits....

You used to be able to get plug wires (only in full sets) dated anyway you wanted (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4). Now, it's in 'vouge' to only make/stock/sell plug wires dated Q3 and Q1 (inventory minimization). So, try all you want, but you just aren't going to find Q4 and Q2 dated wires UNLESS they're real McCoy originals OR they're very old repro parts....

It would not be unusual to find two different dates of wires on a car, although they should be within a couple of months (or one quarter) of each other. They didn't come to assembly plants in car sets - they came by individual wire part number; Packard Electric made the wire in huge bulk lots, with ten or twenty thousand feet of wire on each spool, dated in a roller-marker as the the wire went on the huge spools, which were then stored. When spools were pulled later to feed the wire-cutting/terminating lines, they didn't necessarily come out the same way they went in. I was at Packard several times, and you would never believe how much wire of all kinds was in one place at one time.

I would second those comments with the exception of the "couple of Months" or two quarters issue. I worked in the plant John visited in the early 60s and there was no mandated inventory rotation at all. As explained in a thread some time ago, as long as there was no part number change at the base level, (true at least from 61-67 for all smallblocks) no locational date was assigned to base cable product in inventory. It was pulled and used on an "as needed basis, usually on at "last in first out" system. In practice, virtually any date prior to the car build is possible, although the laws of diminishing probability do apply, especially when Corvette accounted for only about 1% of the sparkplug sets being made from that same stock of cable. There are bigger issues with the repro sets than the dates if you bother to look at an original.
