    I Found My Carb Problem

If you remember I was fouling the two front plugs on my new 283, with a 2 x 4 set up.
I put an aluminum plate between the front carb and the intake, and it ran fine, no plug fouling.
I lowered all the jetting in both carbs and it still fouled the front two plugs.
So I put the plate back between the carb and the manifold, and again it ran OK.
So Sunday I took the front carb apart and closed off the idle jets completely with epoxy, yes they were old ones, thinking if it ran Ok with the carb blocked off, it should run OK with the idle jets pluged.
When I started it up, the front cylinders wouldn't fire, but this time they weren't getting enough of fuel. When I sprayed carb cleaner into the front two barrels, the engine reved up and the cylinders fired.
I borrowed a front carb from my friend and installed it tonight.
OH what a difference! The idles great, with high vacuum, it runs beautiful.
I just came back from a long ride and I am still scraping the bugs off my teeth from smiling.
So after close examination of the original front carb, I found that the two idle transfer slots are almost completely exposed to the intake vacuum with the throttle plates in the fully closed position. This, I believe, will allow unregulated idle mixture to enter the engine at idle and foul the two front plugs.
I been fighting this since the beginning of the summer, and I can't tell you it feels great to have it run correctly. If I drank, I would have a beer, so I am having an ice cream cone instead.
I will look for a new base at Carlise next week.
Hope to see some of you there.
