Setting valve lash on unknown-spec cam

I'm working on a 57 fuelie that had the engine rebuilt in the mid-70's. It changed hands, and the idiot that bought it drove it but didn't maintain it. Gas turned to varnish and ate up the gas tank, and of course, the unit needed rebuilding.
The problem: I don't know the specs on the cam--the mid-70's owner remembers it was an aftermarket cam, and doesn't remember the specs. How do I figure out where to set the solid lifters? Settings right now are anywhere from .014 to .030, and there is no pattern--on some the exhaust are wider than the intakes, on others the gap is wider on the intakes. Thanks for your help!

i would try .022 and .024 and if this setting is noisey tighten them up .004. valve lash is not that important as long as you are not too loose and pounding the valve train.
