If you're talking about the rubber gasket surrounding the windshield inside the mounting frame and reveal moulding, it's a reasonably challenging job but not impossible for a novice. This rubber cushions the glass as well as prevents water from leaking around the glass into the car's interior.
Go to the library you've built to support the ownership of your classic car, pull the shop manual, and look up windshield replacement. It will show you the steps you need to take to remove and replace the windshield glass as well as tell you what parts you might want to have on hand to support the job (like mounting clips, caulk, fresh rubber gasket).
The reason I say this is a tough but not impossible job for the novice is you really have to remove the full windshield assembly from the car to do the job properly. That means being inverted in the seats to loosen fastners under the dash that hold the windshield assy in place (being able to look at the Assembly Instruction Manual or AIM helps you see what's what). These fastners probably haven't been out in a number of years and may be nicely rusted into place. Plus, you'll want a helper to hold/steady the windshield assy as you remove the last of its fastners from inside and assist you in taking it off the car without scratching/dropping.
