What's The Best Way To Seal......

the rear transverse area of intake manifold, short of removing and regasketting it. I have a minor-to-moderate oil leak in the area of the block cast date in my 1965 smallblock.
I am going to try to rinse it with "prep-sol", then squeeze in some RTV black, then repaint halloween orange.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Joe----

The only way that you're going to be able to EFFECTIVELY repair this sort of leak is to remove the manifold and install new gaskets and seals.

Joe, I'm not trying to rain on your day - but you'll spend a lot of time on cleaning and squeezing and still have a leak. If you really want to fix it, pull the manifold. Good Luck

I'm not sure but I think the oil pressure line or switch is in
that location. They leak from time to time. If you've already
determined that the intake is definitely the leak you will be
        off replacing the gaskets.Rob

Joe - I have tried simple methods like you describe with little to no success, for a long range fix. I agree with Joe L and Steve, pulling the manifold to correctly clean and seal is the only way to go. It really is not very difficult and only takes a few hours, just pay attention to cleaning and gasket removal, and use the sealing procedures Joe has posted here recently...Craig

            Too easy...

Clean all oil, dirt, etc. from the area with solvent, rags, solvent, etc. Apply Permatex hight temp rtv silicone 26B and press into the gap under the intake manifold. This product is manufactured in Chevy engine orange, anyone want to guess why?

The shop manual shows a simple round "plug" that I think goes into the distributor hole to guide the manifold down onto the heads/block without any sideways motion that could knock the gasket out of place leaving you at square one. Seems to be worth the trouble.
