    1996 Alternator

What's the correct part number for a 1996 Grand Sport (LT-4) alternator? Anyone have a photo of it mounted?

    TIA

Jim, don't know the part number, but here's a pic of my original LT-4 alternator.

thanks for the photo. That looks like mine, also. I don't see a part number on the lower boss, either

I don't have the PRODUCTION part number for this alternator. However, these alternators usually have the part number laser-printed and it's often in a location that cannot be seen with the alternator installed on the car. I suppose it's even possible that the printing might fade out over time.

i don't see any numbers anywhere on this alternator. The judging guide shows the part number and Julian date on the mounting boss at the a/c compressor end. Mine does not have those numbers at that location. The JG shows a blank for the part number on the LT-4, which I thought was odd

Jim, that's my understanding that the LT4 has no number stamped on the alternator. I observed the same thing on my friend's 96 Grand Sport.

There had to be some identifying marking on the alternator, if not a part number them a broadcast code. The LT1 and LT4 alternators were of identical configuration and they were even of the same amperage rating. So, the assembly line workers would had to have had some way to differentiate them. The only difference I can imagine is that there was a "clocking" difference but I don't even see how that would have been necessary since the LT1 and LT4 alternators mount the same.

                Re: 1996 Alternator

Gentlemen, I hope that I can shed some light on this topic. I will be providing information that was furnished to me by other NCRS members. The current 94-96 Judging Manual has a number of items that have to be changed in the new manual when it comes out.

As far as the 1996 LT4, the early models and I only have references to four models, VIN 600138,291,458 and 705 have a part number of 10480200 stamped on the top of the alternator which can seen with no problem. Another point is that the date codes begin to shift in their appearance, Earlier alternators had month-day-year. The later 96 models had the Julian date code. This change over could have take place when the numbers were placed on the underside of the alternator and the part number changed from 10480200 to 10480202.

The next references that were supplied to me were 1996 LT4 VINs 600681,730, 818 and 923. No identifying information was on the top of the alternator. This information was now present on the underside of the alternator and not really readable for judging purposes. I am not speaking for NCRS now, only my humble opinion. Do not have a photo showing the part number once it was placed underneath. Some folks said they could see a partial number using a mirror. This is why I presume no alternator part number is shown for the LT4 in the 94-96 Judging Manual.

I am attaching a photo of a April Build 1996 LT1 alternator that shows the identifiers that were located on the underside of the alternator and not readable from the top view. This photo was taken of the alternator after it was removed from the 1996 Corvette. Also you will note that the part number is now 10480202. Earlier LT1 part numbers for 1996 and later 1995 were 10480200. The alternator part number for early 1995 Corvettes was 10480139, which was incorrectly shown in the Judging Manual as 10488139.

The second photo shows the different method of displaying the date code.

Also the judging manual has the amps listed incorrectly, I believe it should be 140 amps.

I hope this helps and if you feel it is not correct, please let me know so that I can make changes.

The broadcast code can be seen clearly stamped in your first photo.

In SERVICE, GM specified different alternators for 1996 LT1 and LT4. Both were 140 amp units. The original PRODUCTION part numbers were never available in SERVICE and the SERVICE alternators were always available only as "remanufactured" (although it's very possible/probable that new units were actually supplied, at least for awhile). The SERVICE part numbers were GM #10463679 for the LT1 and GM #10463677 for the LT4. GM #10463679 has recently been discontinued and replaced by GM #19244764.

I'm curious as to what the difference was between the original LT1 and LT4 alternators. I just can't see a reason for the difference considering that both were 140 amp units and of the same configuration.
