Upon engine disassembly pushrods/rocker arms/balls should be kept together as matched sets. After cleaning, carefully inspect the wear surfaces. If they are merely burnished, they are okay to reuse. Notches or galling requires replacement, but all or most will usually check out okay.

Reinstall the matched sets so the adjacent wear surfaces mate as before removal, but they can go in any position since lifters and valves are new.

Roll them On a pane of glass to make certain they're straight. I've found a few that wobble, even on big blocks

I find it difficult to imagine how pushrods could get bent on the 1979 production engine, so the question you need to answer is why are they bent.

Did it previously or does it now have something other that an OE replacement cam and OE replacement valve springs?

You've provided very little information to go on.

The original style push rods used for your application were discontinued by GM quite some time ago. The replacements are welded-ball type push-rods. These are absolutely excellent pushrods but they're not like the originals and they're expensive ($17.65 EACH, GM list price).

Back in the day when we bought small block pushrods from the dealer, we would order 32 and hope to get 16 straight ones. They came bent from GMSPO. We would use the dealer's glass countertop to check them. At first, the part's manager was amazed, but the warehouse wasn't.
