    CA to Reissue Black Plates

Thought this was very cool and hope all states follow suite, CA is reissuing the vintage black plates for collector car market. Allegedly using original tools/dies but not by prisoners

That is cool. I grew up in CA; I still remember the # of my first car's black plate- REZ 474. It was original to the car, a '65 Impala.

I'm in Texas now where they issued year specific plates until the mid-70s. And for antique registration, you can still use those original plates on you car.

Registration lasts five years, costs about $60, and you're exempt from state inspection. What a deal!

The back of my car says all you need to know- 1970 Texas Corvette.

I don't think TX had vanity plates back in the day, but it would be cool to find a 1970 plate that read LS5 454, or something similar. I wonder if that plate was produced a part of the regular progression of numbers...

          Mark,

In the sixties and seventies and probably well after that, Texas plates were comprised of three letters together then three numbers. Therefore, LS5 454 would never have been made...unfortunately, because that would be a neat one to find.

P.S. Don't know why they pic loaded sideways...it wasn't that way in the photo gallery (and, I don't know how to fix it on this site...sorry).

I actually read that the plates will be made at Folsom Prision. One major difference is that the new plates will have reflective paint. And the plates are offered to anyone, to include a Prius owner.

              Leif,

And what looks cooler from behind than a midyear coupe? I think I remember your car from last year's Regional because I've always had a weakness for L79 midyears. And with AC! Nice.

But even if you're short on garage space, I don't recommend storing them sideways.

EDIT: Where's the antique registration tag?

                Mark,

I didn't register her as an antique...legally that minimizes how much you're allowed to drive (not drive) the car. I put about 3000 miles per year on mine. And, yes, that was me at the Lone Star Regional. Was that your Donnybrooke Green just across the aisle from mine? Left rear in picture?

                  Leif,

I understand . However that means LSV 454 could be had ! I would settle for that ! I would just put a little dot or dash after the LS .

                  P.S. I also don't recommend storing them sideways !!!

No, not my car. But I almost fell over when I saw my car's twin at the show. Very similarly equipped except I have Light Saddle interior and that car's interior is black. The other difference is his car is probably put together; I'm in the middle of interior work so the seats, carpet, console, etc. are removed.

The owner is from Oklahoma, and I believe his handle is "Zoomin" on the Corvetteforum; see http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/...o-me-70-a.html

Nice car; I'm trying to remember if it won Top or Second Flight at Regional...

Most states offer vanity plates that are customizable to ones tastes. bet California will take orders and emboss with any letters or numbers.

It scored Top, very first time shown. An outstanding car!

can you park my L79 on it's tires?

California has always allowed you to take old black plates and reassign them to a newer car. The old plates had a date stamped on them where the year sticker goes.
For example: my 63's back licence plate looks just like one of the new ones will, but the front plate, where there is no month and year sticker has a "63" stamped in it.
So, the new plate will look good, but it is still nice to try to find originals with a date on them.
