    C2 Trip odometer knob

I want to remove and paint the under-the-instrument-cluster bracket that the trip odometer goes through. I have the bracket disconnected from the cross member but the knob on the cable is larger than the hole in the bracket that the cable goes through.

Is the knob easily removed from the end of the cable? Is it intended to be removed & replaced or is it a one time on design that requires the cable to be completely removed so the bracket can slip over the other end? I don't want to damage the knob or cable - it all works, I just have some surface rust and dings on the bracket that need to be dressed up.

Discovered the answer via trail ---- and fortunately ---- no error. The black plastic knob is pushed straight on to the end of the cable which is splined. To remove the knob pull straight back - do not twist. Comes off reasonably easy - with a bit of force. Probably goes back on the same way.
