Planning a winter project of repainting our BB engine. Engine is a fresh rebuild by PO but they apparently didn't repaint!?! Recent topic on Corvette Forum about BB color being more orange. Hemi Orange suggested. All agree BB color more orange than SB. Agree and you guys have a paint code? Thanks

Larry------
Color is one problem, gloss level is another. The only engine paint I've ever found that has the right gloss level is the Bill Hirsch-supplied paint. Unfortunately, at least the last time I purchased it, the color was way off for either big block or small block. All of the other Chevrolet orange engine paints I've tried (and I've tried LOTS and LOTS of them) have been way too glossy. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

But the best answer I've seen, which has been discussed here before, is engine color varied year to year and supplier to supplier. It was purchased, made and delivered in bulk with probably a wide spec tolerance for color to keep cost low.
Modern paint probably has better color hold out than old-fashioned bulk paint, so maybe the new stuff is a bit more glossy. Putting it on thin and a bit dry can help with that.Mark Edmondson

Re: '66 427 Engine Paint
Joe and Larry
Just reread Joe's post , if it is indeed the "More Orange " Dupli-Color , then the # I gave is the wrong one, as that is the more red color.
The more orange color is 1620.
I thought 66 was still using the red orange, and the orange started in 67 . Am I wrong ,or is there a difference between big and small blocks?

Re: '66 427 Engine Paint
Plus, I was mostly exposed to big blocks from the '70s, not the '60s (I don't know if that makes a difference or not).
By the way, I grew up in Los Angeles. Stuff isn't bigger there, just more chaotic and crowded.
Still, I remember original big blocks (from the '70s) as more red than small blocks.Mark Edmondson

Re: '66 427 Engine Paint
Attached are two pictures on the left of the '65 BB I painted with Bill Hirsch Chevrolet Orange paint. It received no deductions for color or gloss through all levels of NCRS Flight Judging in 2014. The second two pictures on the right were taken of a 44k mile '65 BB up for auction at Kansas City in 2014.
Hope this helps.

Bill Hirsch must have changed their color formulation since I bought the paint from them. This color looks nothing like the paint I bought. However, my purchase was a very long time ago.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
