Can I use the damper bolt to pull the damper on?

I'm assembling the engine and the HD is quite a snug fit. I've been hitting it with a rubber mallet and its on enough now so that I can catch about a 1/4" of the HD bolt. Can I use that bolt to pull the HD on? I'm just afraid that if I mess up these threads I'll be screwed but I don't see a way to do this without it. Thanks.

Stay away from any kind of hammers Mike. Make sure your shaft is nice & clean as well as the inside of the HB. AND use the tool Ralph mentioned.

Mike, You can make a puller with a bolt as I've made. See Addendum C pg 44 in the attached file.

You can pull it on with the balancer bolt. However, you're better off using an arrangement like Richard has pictured. The best of all is to use a special tool which is designed for this purpose. This tool uses a thrust bearing to ease the installation but is, in principle, similar to the homemade tool that Richard pictures. The tool is often supplied in combination with a balancer puller.

One important thing to keep in mind, though: you must be absolutely certain that absolutely no "burrs" or "dings" or "upset metal"exist on the crank snout or on the balancer orifice. If there is, you'll never get the balancer seated and you'll wear out your arm in the effort.

I don't see a problem using a bolt to pull it on, but start with a longer bolt to get good thread engagement. The name of this device is "torsional damper", not "dampener". It's also called a harmonic balancer, and it's purpose is to damp crankshaft torsional vibration at high revs and load.

Mike heres a pic. on my installer tool. I myself don't like used a Hammer on the crankshaft as the thrust bearing does not like to much hammering.
