First of all I am a brand new member and new to this forum. Thank you in advance for your help and allowing me to ask questions. I recently obtained a 1957 built in July, supposed to be factory equipped 4 speed. The transmission is not a 57, it is a T10-1B and has no stampings on the machined pad on left rear. The tail housing however is a T10-7 dated 5-3-57. would this date be to early to come equipped on a July build? Thanks again

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
Brice,
Once I had the original T-10 out of SN 4351. It was a heater and radio delete FI car with the original engine, transmission and rear end.
Hope that helps. That Vette was originally and Ohio car.

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
With no assembly stamp on the left rear of the main case, the trans may have been assembled by "Bubba's 4 Speeds", with the intent to be able to show the cast iron main case and the aluminum tailshaft. It might also call for a picture of both sides of the tailshaft extension just to make sure of who made the date castings. There should be two "half-moon" indentations in the end of the extension that facilitate access to the rear seal. One of the best indications of a "real" '57 extension is to remove one of the bolts into the extension at the rear mount - if it is a 3/8" bolt, it's 90/10 that it's real. The General later made those holes for a 7/16" bolt.- Top

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
it does have the half moon cutouts at rear, but the bolts that go into it appear to be 7/16

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
thank you for the information. I am having a lot of fun trying to see exactly what I have got. The car is supposed to be a factory 4 speed, but it was not represented to be all numbers matching....... The engine is F722EG which should be a manual and the rear end is AH which should be manual.- Top

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
You're going to want the 56-7 Judging Guide and the 1957 Assembly Instruction Manual; I think that the o/a accepted VIN for 4-spd availability is around #3700 or so - the JG will spell it out.- Top

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
Brice,
Welcome to NCRS!
What's the last 4 VIN (just the 1st 3 numbers are okay, if you don't want to enter all 4) of the car?
Describe the shifter ball.
Like Mike said, post a photo of the side plate (where shifter bolts up to the transmission ears).

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
Be sure to check the side cover as Mike suggests; if it is one without the gusseting (reinforcements) on the shift levers and is a '57, we can all start speculating on what happened to that tough old piece of cast iron main case!- Top

Loren, I am curious where you got this information re, early '57 4 speed? Have
ALL the original blueprints even original layout print and I could not verify your comments.
Maybe my eye site is failing, Do you have a part # for this original 3/8 bolt. Prints also do not
show half-moon cut outs.- Top

Re: 1957 4 speed transmission questions
Dave: I have or have had 3 original 57 t-10s in my time. all three had the cut-outs of their tail housings in the vicinity of the rear seals as loren mentioned. as far as the 3/8 vs 7/16 bolts to fasten the shifter to the tail housing, I too questioned Loren's comment but I'm not gonna put one of our 57's on the shop lift to check their bolt size.too damn cold @ here. regards, mike- Top
