Re: Fed up with tri power

You can get the LS6 low rise rectangular port manifold p/n 3963569 either used or brand new repro for about $350-$400. Add a new Holley 4150 on it and you will have a combo that will fit and should work well.

Re: Fed up with tri power

Is tri-power really that unreliable? Or is the OP having an issue with proper repair/service?

"If it’s not fuel lines leaking, it’s carbs leaking or floats sticking or fuel leaking down the throat of a secondary flooding out the engine." A single Holley 4150 can have these problems if not properly set up and maintained.

Re: Fed up with tri power

In my experience tri-power is not any less reliable than a regular 4 barrel. Its a bit trickier to setup and tune, you need to make sure the carbs are setup correctly before you bolt them on and then tweak adjustments and the linkages. Trouble is there are few shops left that understand how to do this. The fuel leaks the OP is having likely could be cured with a new set of feeder pipes or proper installation where you are sure the adapters in the carbs are tight before you tighten the fuel lines.

I've had my share of Tri-Powered cars and i understand your frustration. I've converted to all 1967 390 horse cars and with the hood closed, you hardly notice the difference. With the way i drive these cars these days, 390 or 435 doesn't make any difference.

Three duces is just a sales/showroom Gimmick. It never will perform as well as a single 4 barrel. The same 66 4 barrel will out run the 67 tri power every time. I never could understand the big love for tri power. If just looks of more carburetors make guys happy then so be it.

Rich, you will enjoy the single 4 barrel driving. Simplistic and more go without the temperamental characteristics. Put the original tri power set up in stowage for the future.

Think of this as running radial tires vs the bias ply. I wouldn’t even consider bias ply tires on a car I drive.

I had Eric at vintagemusclecars re do my carbs 4 years ago. They still run flawlessly. The engine runs even better after I converted the distributor to manifold vacuum and followed Lars' tuning procedure. And my fuel lines did leak until i added the coned copper washers. This is Eric's webpage http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/

I went ACE hardware and got copper washers of the correct diameter. they stopped fitting leaking immediately. They become cones when you tighten the fitting.

Rich, I sent Eric the carbs. He actually runs the carbs on an engine before shipping them back.

                          Rich,
I agree with Mark Giusti and highly recommend you have Eric at Musclecar Parts rebuild your carbs. His address is 306 lang Ct. Union, OH 45322 (937) 836-1885 http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/

Don't give up on your tri-power. It not only looks cool and but adds power. Go with Eric and you will not regret it.

Thanks for the endorsements. I got the rear carb back yesterday but have not had a chance to install it.

Hi Rich, In 1968 I had the first big block convertible in my area. I had so much tri-carb issues with it. Especially the end carbs.
Here's what I did. My Dad's heating man made to block off plates for the end carbs. I disconnected the fuel lines and ran on the center carb.
The car screamed and was quite enjoyable to drive. John

As I've said before, you'll notice that GM did not use 3X2 on the really high performance big blocks, the L-88 and ZL-1. For those, it was a single 4 barrel. There's a message in that.
