    C2 semi gloss paint ?

Hi, ready to paint some of the pieces for my 66 roadster that are listed as semi gloss in the judging manual and have a ?.
I have semi flat #1613 krylon which to me looks closer to the parts in the manual and a semi gloss which almost looks like gloss black. Is one more correct than the other
    thanks inadvance Bob

    Robert,

GM used a semi-gloss black paint, part number 1050104 which is now discontinued. However, the good news is you can still buy this paint from Melrose Corvette. Their number is: (815) 758 - 2783. The formula has changed, but it is minor and may not be noticeable to an untrained eye.

Depending on what your painting Krylon #1613 should be fine. Eastwood makes some good semi-gloss color matches also.

Robert - Is that an old can of Krylon #1613? Krylon reformulated that popular number some years ago and it hasn't been the same since. The commonly available Krylon Satin Black isn't that good, in my opinion. Some of us have found that the Krylon 'Industrial' #1613, is closer to what we're used to seeing but even it's a bit 'flatter' than I recall.

I bought a case of the 1613 semi flat industrial lacquer , looks a little to flat for me

What is the opinion of SEM Trim Black #39143?

Owen - While I still like the Industrial Krylon #1613, that 'extra flatness' doesn't work for me like the old formula does so on certain items I prefer the SEM Trim Paint you listed, #39143. My neighbor had just pulled his steering column on his 66 L72 Coupe and had paint on order but was hoping to get it painted and resinstalled sooner rather than later so I offered up both the Industrial Krylon #1613 and the SEM paint, #39143. He wound up using the SEM and said it had just a bit more 'semi-gloss' to it and looked nicer.

I agree with your assessment, Mike. I did the same...bought a six-pack case of #1613. While a very nice product, a bit less satin appearing than I remember.

There are other alternatives like John Deere Blitz Black, etc. You may want to key into the archives to see this discussed in the past. Stay Safe!

                    Robert,

On my 67 with black interior, I used SEM Trim Black 39143 for interior trim (Glove Box, console, etc) as well as exterior rocker panels, frame touch-ups. It is a little tougher paint than the Krylon #1613.

I have used the Blitz Black and really liked the look. I won't claim it is "correct", but it gave a very good, satin looking sheen in my opinion. I got mine years ago, so not sure of availability. I have used both spray cans and mix and spray through a gun. Sprayed out well even considering my amateur skills.

John Deere Blitz Black also changed formulas several years ago, and is not the same sheen/color it used to be.
