    Paul,

    One would think that the catalytic converter would even it up, restrict it evenly, etc., I'm hearing a lot of different logic. I'm grateful for all the input but the question was posed for restoring an old muffler. The consensus states that I should perhaps get a new set, save the originals in an air tight plastic, and enjoy driving my car. When frame off restoration comes to be an issue for the car, I'll have the original parts and I can do as I see fit. Hopefully, the judges like everything afterwards.

      Unless you plan to attempt bowtie certification, that sounds like a perfect game plan. In flight judging, I would expect a quality set of mufflers with a good attempt at replicating any factory black out (if any existed) would receive few deductions. Were not the mufflers a slip fit with clamps from the factory on your year model? By that I mean NOT a welded assembly with the Y pipe.
