    66 Convertible Windshield Gasket source

I have to replace this and have heard Corvette Rubber Co has the best product. Can any of you opine on this or are they all the same?

    Thanks,

Have used windshield rubber from Corvette Central and Auto Accessories of America. Both were good,

I installed the Corvette Rubber gasket in my 67 convertible last year and it fit perfectly. No issues or concerns at all.

Thanks guys....having trouble finding an installer and may have to tackle it myself. Any of you guys do your own?

              Brian,
I did my own with the help of my son in law. It probably can be down by yourself but it goes a little easier with an extra hand. Took about 45 minutes with no issues. The last upper corner takes a bit of persuasion but it will go in. Passed the garden hose leak check so I’m happy.

I used the installation procedures in the Chevrolet Service Manual and the AIM data. Fairly straightforward job.

Awesome Tom, I didn't know there was glass install info in the AIM.....also will be recruiting my son in law LOL. What sealants did you use? I'm sure anything referenced there would be outdated.

                Thanks!

I used 3M Auto Glass Urethane Windshield Adhesive, 08693 between the rubber and glass and CRL CRL7708 Black Windshield and Body Sealant between the windshield pinch weld and rubber gasket.

I installed my own in my 63 coupe. Had a couple of friends available to help watch and push a little. It went in great with a cord. If your mouldings are removed, it is an easier job than you would think. Paul

                      Hi Brian,

Same as Tom and Paul said, I did my windshield/gasket install with a buddy...

Shots below from a John Hinckley presentation show how it was done at St. Louis on a '63...

It looks to me like shot 4 has an extension tube on the nozzle to get between the glass and the gasket channel. Then in shot 5, it looks to me like that tube has been removed to do the gasket-to-body sealant. I'm amazed at how much "goopage" is shown oozing out at the top on that last shot...maybe they got better at that as the C2 build progressed??

And I'll bet - but can't prove - the 55-gallon sealant drum off to the side of the line had an electric waist jacket around it to keep the sealant/adhesive nice and warm so it flowed thru the delivery hose/nozzle; and then spread more evenly in the gasket channels and body-to-gasket voids...

                      Good Luck!

                          Gary,
you are correct, the sealant in the last photo was tan in color, it is the dried material that resembles plumbers putty in original windshield moldings when they are removed. Don’t know where one would get a similar sealant today which is why I used the CRL sealant recommended by a few glass installers.

                            Hi Tom,

Interesting. So, are you also thinking that tan material was the same stuff being shot into the gasket-to-glass channel with the small tube extension in shot 4? Note that the nozzle body (except for the extension) and everything behind it look identical in shots 4 and 5.

FYI - The windshield I replaced was NOT the original one with my car - plus I can't remember color differences there anyway as it was nearly 20 years ago...
                            thx,
                            Mark

equivalent of the original #3710409 sealing compound used for that application is 3M #08509 Bedding & Sealing Compound.
