      Took another hard look at the eyelets. The entire bag was pretty dingy looking. Cleaned the bag up best I could with water and Dawn. I now believe the eyelets were not plated, just grungy looking. There are some spots of light rust. I'm quite confident this is the original bag.

        One final picture of the eyelet on my spare '67 washer bag with the gray canvas backing. After 30 seconds of polishing with bronze wool, the eyelet is most certainly brass (non-magnetic)
        Final results of our little, unofficial survey:
        Tan backed canvas bags have brass colored (magnetic) steel eyelets.
        Gray backed canvas bags have solid brass (non-magnetic) eyelets.
        We can all sleep better now
