Re: Wrong throw-out!!
Not sure what I have is GREAT!; but after doing my '67 ~20 years ago, (and also having done about 4 or 5 other makes before that) I wrote these notes - hoping I would never have to do it again. PS - I didn't have (and still don't have) a lift! Sheeesh!
- Two floor jacks (one for the engine and one for the trans) are most helpful
- review shop manual (see notes below for clarification of "clockwise")
- loosen all bolts at tailpiece end of trans mounting
- remove brackets and rubber isolation mount
- Jack engine up to lift trans off of the tailpiece mount
- remove shifter mechanism from shifter bracket (2 bolts) short one is difficult to reach
- remove bracket (long bolt goes through bracket AND tailpiece mount - other side is shorter bolt)
- pull shifter and linkage up through floorpan opening
- remove universal "U-clamps"
- drop driveshaft
- remove yoke from tailpiece spline
- loosen all bolts to bell housing
- Lower engine until distributor almost touches wiper motor (be careful)
- move trans toward rear of car
- rotate so that shifter cover plate and bolts point toward the floor (clockwise if looking at the flywheel)
- trans should now have enough room to get past the bell housing
- pull trans input shaft back and out of throwout bearing and drop (lower 😊
to the floor - then pull tailpiece out of cross-member and the tranny is out
Please don't yell at me for saying this, but I knew guys (NOT ME) who would go to all that trouble and not replace one (or some) of the following parts (admittedly, we were young, stupid and certainly didn't have a lot of money!):- clutch plate - so, no matter how good it looks, replace it
- pressure plate - no matter how good it looks, replace it
- throwout bearing - no matter how good it looks or FEELS, replace it
- pilot bushing or bearing - no matter how good it looks or FEELS, replace it
- flywheel - this is tougher to evaluate, but run your fingernail across the mating surface - if it feels "scored" or "ridged"; take it off and have it re-dressed. Of course, the fingernail test will not tell you if it's warped, so if money's no object, maybe have it re-dressed anyhow?
hope maybe this might help....good luck!thx,

Re: Wrong throw-out!!
Obtain some bolts about 3" long that will screw into the bellhousing in place of the bolts holding the trans to the bell housing. Cut the heads off and insert them into the holes. These will aid to guide the trans out of the bellhousing. Use those bolts in reverse order as you reinstall the trans.
A jack under the bellhousing or pan will keep the engine/trans in alignment as you disassemble.- Top

Re: Wrong throw-out!!
I agree with the advice described above. The only additional thing i did was build a cradle (see photos) for jacking the engine up and down because i was afraid to damage the oil pan by jacking it directly. This worked well on a 1959 but i am not familiar with the frame on a 63-64 so don't know if there would be any interferences below the engine.- Top

Re: Wrong throw-out!!
When I bought my 66 I had engine issues / whipped cam / I pulled the motor out leaving the transmission in place had the engine issues corrected and then reinserted the engine on to the transmission . This seems like a lot of work to get to the thro-out bearing but most of the work is from above / which is much easier than removing a tranny from below / which I've done on a 63 in my earlier days . Hope this helps. Jeff- Top
