    Charles,
The factory used small rubber blocks to keep the windshield at the correct height. Thiokol sealer from a caulking gun was used inboard of a cloth-backed foam rubber damming strip to keep it from oozing inward. Those small rubber blocks are the key. Is your old windshield still installed? If so, can you get measurements from all four corners? On the other forums, 3/8 butyl tape was mentioned for the thinner reproduction windshields.
I used polyurethane adhesive from a caulking gun on my ‘72 install. Good luck!

    John

I first did a dry fit on my 69 by laying the windshield in the frame, then installing the trim, and then using tongue depressors between the glass and frame at four locations. Once I had the correct "height" I removed everything and made rubber blocks of the same thickness as the tongue depressors. I also used a sealant from a caulking gun that I got from a windshield place, not the tape.

Yes there was a dam originally, with a woven fiber backing, which is visible on original cars.
The currently available dam material is not the same, it's side profile is square or rectangle shaped the original is a wedge and the lip closest to the body rolls a little on install. You still need to put your blocks in and set your glass height to take up any gap between the trim and the windshield.

In this photo of my vin in the lower part of the photo you can see the edge of the dam and the cloth backer (which keeps the intalled from stretching the dam out of shape as well as where the adhesive was applied.
