    Mid year metallic brake shoes

Can anyone help identify these NOS metallic brakes shoes? I believe they are 1963/1964 rears...high performance.

    Thanks,

    Joe

If they are about 2" wide they are replacement shoes for C1 RPO 686, both front and rear I believe and C2 J-65, rear only. The C2 J-65 front shoes are 2.75" wide.

The GMPD number is 3794194. These appear to have a Delco number, 5461964. I wasn't aware that they were ever available from Delco. This number may just be the p/n for the bare shoe without the lining material.

I believe 686/J-65 used the same bare shoe as base brakes. The difference was the friction material.

They sure are in nice cosmetic condition for such old NOS parts - look like they were made yesterday!

Duke, if my memory is correct, the shoes themselves had a light coat of cosmoline or something similar to prevent corrosion

Joe, Duke --- agree, those are in superb condition. I have NOS in the box sets of the 194's (rear) and 191's (fronts), but they have light surface rust on the bare steel. However, the ink stamps are visible and read 5461964 SEC (secondary) and 5461963 PRI (primary). On the curve is stamped Delco Moraine and 5461965 (on both primaries and secondaries).

        My P&A30's call for the '194s' as 11 x 2", fitting a whole bunch, incl. '63-64 J65 rears, also '59-65 Pass metallic rears, '57-58 Pass fronts, '60-62 Corvette (exc H.D. Brake/Susp.) fronts.

There's sets of NOS '191' and '194's on eBay right now.

Duke and Wayne..thanks for your response. I have the original GM box the brakeshoes came in but there was no part#on the box. They are 2" wide..and in perfect condition. Looks like they apply to RPO 686 fronts and J56 rears...or something to that effect.

I have a set of NOS 1956/1957 Cera metallic shoes and they look pretty darn nice as well...still in the original box.

          Regards,

          Joe

Joe -- hows this for an old box. You can barely make out the "194" ink stamp under the '1-Part No.', and to the right of the Group #. The box end flap is dated 6/63.

If memory serves, I bought these off Rich Hagewood (sp?) of Dallas, back in late '70s.

No, according to the P&A catalog 686 front AND rear, and J-65 rear. J-56 was the HD finned drum package that was part of Z-06 in '63 and broken out to the separate J-56 option in '64.

              J-65 and J-56 seem to get flip-flopped a lot - including the '63-'64 JG.
