    67 Blinker Rate with Oriignal Tung-Sol 323

Just replaced my after-market flasher with an original Tung-Sol 323. One of the Tung-Sol flashers I bought causes the blinkers to blink very fast while a second apparently identical unit causes them to blink at a much slower, which seems normal to me, rate. Can anyone with an original Tung-Sol flasher tell me how fast their blinkers blink? Kind of a hard question to answer, but by fast I mean about as fast as the blinkers could go. Thanks.

Kirk - Wagner still makes a 323, as far as I know, so I suggest buying a new 323 and doing the comparison of the new one and your original one on your car.

Also, I have an older 323 and it indicates "MFD TO SAE J590a." That info must be published somewhere, so try to Google it.

    Good luck, Pete

A few years ago I picked up several dozen NOS non-dot Tungsol 224 flashers. I went through and tested them, one right after another. I was very surprised how much variability there was in the flash rate between the flashers. The faster ones had to have been over twice as fast as some of the slower ones.

Interesting, maybe there wasn't a real standard flash rate. Does anyone know if judges look at the rate of flash during operations?

They look during Ops and if it's really slow like onnnnnnnnnnnnnn offffffffffffffffff not onnn offf onnn you get a deduct. It can't look stuck on or off too long in other words.

Would a nice fast rate bother them? I actually kinda liked the flasher that had a faster rate.

              Kirk,
I replaced my aftermarket metal flasher on my 66 with a NOS 224 for Flight Judging this past weekend. Not knowing what was the correct blinking rate, it was a faster than what I had. Went ahead and went with it...got to Ops and they felt it was too fast and got a 5 pt deduct! Previous judging received 1 pt deduct for wrong flasher....should have kept the aftermarket in!!!!

I suppose there is no way to adjust the blinking rate??

                Hi Kirk:

If you can buy a new Wagner 323, the physical design is the same as the original. With some careful work you can substitute the new "guts" into the original housing. Other replacement brands besides Wagner may also be suitable for this type of transplant.

                  Thanks Joe,

I heard of that before. The second one I got blinks at what I would consider a decent rate that should be "normal" for judging. Maybe I could try it with the second unit that blinks too fast as a "dry run".
