    Jerry,

Consider using Stu's method as you will end up with a much better looking grille in the end. It may take a little practice BUT all you have to do if you mess up is wash it off with thinner and start over.
Using tape will not only look bad it will feel bad!
Black Lacquer is still available in most states and works a lot better than enamel.

      Joe,

I'm assuming by your response that I just focus on the top side of the grille for cleaning and ignore the vertical sides of each section/indentation of the grille?

I taped one and wiped it off as soon as it was done to heavy tape lines . I have done a few pairs by spraying the complete panel and using a 3m rubber squeegee to wipe it down as soon as you are done spraying . You can buff it lightly with a cotton or micro cloth when it is dry . I used krylon semi gloss lacquer .

Is the black supposed to be flat or semi gloss?

Spray the whole grill and use a 10 inch sponge sanding block to remove the paint from the top. If you remove the paint from any square it is easy to tape and repaint. Takes time and elbow grease but will look like new.
