    70 Rear Spring Questions?

I have several questions in this area:

    1. What is the correct finish of the center plate? ----- I believe it to be semi gloss black?

    2. Is the finish on the (4) mounting bolts black oxide or black phosphate?

    3. The (4) bolts that I have are just a shade under 3.25 long (under the head) --- is this OK for a standard 9 leaf spring? or should it be a bit longer for better engagement?--- Not sure if this spring is original or not ?? --- it has traces of the light grey primer on the end faces and the ends are curled up.

Thank you very much for your help,
    Ralph

    Re: 70 Rear Spring Questions?

    1. Semi Gloss Black is correct

    2. Black phosphate

    3. Not sure of the exact length but let me warn you. The two rear most bolts can extend through the open end of the cover casting without causing a problem. The two forward bolts screw into a blind hole and the casting is thin at the top. You can break into the housing with a bolt that is too long. The least of your worry will be the constant oil seepage you will get from that bolt. If the piece breaks free it can end up between the gears and that would be a disaster.

Leaf springs were a special primer gray with black plastic separators, a black phosphate center bolt and no paint on the cushion cups.
