    John,

You're welcome. I was sorry to learn from the web site that the "Vehicle Invoices" only go back to 1977 for Chevrolets and that the "Build Records" are only available for Caddys. Oh well!

    Joe

It is interesting to those of us who own a Cadillac that Allied-Vaughn is now handling those records. I got mine many moons ago, and I don't remember the source.. I wonder who is handling Pontiac. Just out of curiosity. No Indians in my garage(s).

        Terry -

I think PHS (Pontiac Historical Services), Jim Mattison's outfit, still handles all the Pontiac authentication info.

Wasn't Jim M. supposed to take a stab at old Chevy records as well, but some contractual or interpersonal disagreement canned the attempt before it even got off the ground ?

It got off the ground (Jim asked me to come out of retirement and work on it with him at the time) and progressed, but nothing was found (just like the two internal searches under Jim Perkins, which Art Armstrong was involved in). A second expanded search was planned, but as I recall, management changes at Chevrolet eliminated the budget for it.

              I

John, I'm aware of only one search that was conducted under Perkins and it was the one that I did. Jim Perkins was VERY interested in finding the "old" build documents and I can assure you we left NO stone unturned while looking for them. Some day, and I hope it's soon because I'm getting tired of going over this every few months, you all (including the current GMers) will hopefully start believing me.....................THEY ARE NOT IN THE GM FILES (what's left of them).

Hey, Art's back with us! I hope the annual trek to Florida went without mishap, Art...

As a Mo-Par brat from Detroit, I didn't have many GM contacts But the fella who lived next door to my girl friend (Bob Lund) was a Chevy guy. And, that's EXACTLY what he told me in the mid-70's at a summer barbeque...records do NOT exist...

                  Re: Documentation discussion: Mid Year

Yep we made it without a hitch and we are all settled in here in SW FL, where the weather in not only sunny, but the temp has been as close to perfect as it gets.

I assume that the Bob Lund you knew is the one (I knew two Bob Lund's at GM) that was a Chevrolet General Manager at one time. If it was, he probably wouldn't have known where the old records were if they fell off a shelf and hit him. He like most executives, didn't have a clue where the really good stashes were. That's why Jim Perkins tapped my self and a guy named, Dick Nixon, yes, Dick Nixon, to conduct the search, because that's what we did for GM.............Engineering Research and therefore we knew where the bodies were buried.

It's curious to me that he made that statement to you in the mid 70's and we didn't even do the MOTHER of all searches until the early 90's. ??????

                    Re: Documentation discussion: Mid Year

The Bob Lund I'm referring to lived on Bennington Drive, about two houses south of Lone Pine (near Cranbrook HS) in Bloomington Hills. Bob WAS a 'wig' in Chevy management, but he didn't collect Corvettes. He had 2-3 Stanley Steamers that he drove around on nice summer days.

I'm trying to remember when that barbeque was; it was either 1976 or 1986. My only reason for remembering is my uncle from Saginaw was a Corvette enthusiast (his wife's family owned a Chevy dealership near Saginaw) and he'd mentioned something about the rumor of production records being no longer in existence.

So, when Bob arrived for dinner in his Steamer with the group gathered on the porch + out in the back yard, I made 'small talk' with one of the few Chevy/GM subjects I had knowledge of. Bob's reply was short and concise..."There are no records. They were destroyed."

Also, I remember an evening at the bar of the Huron Valley Hunt club in Farmington Hills. Let's see, that would have been circa 1972...

Our party was sitting at the bar waiting for our table and an 'old duffer' pulled up a stool and struck up a conversation. He 'grilled' me this way and that way on the topic of Vietnam and I held the typical college kid, liberal, line. The conversation broke when our party was called for 'table ready' and the old guy shook my hand and said something nice in parting.

When we sat down for dinner, one of the guests in our party (a Detroit local charity fund raiser lady) acted suprized that I knew the guy at the bar. I confessed, I didn't know him from Adam. She chuckled and told me not that many of my age spent 30-40 minutes talking politics with Pete Estes...

Jack, Actually within GM PRIOR to my mother of all searches it was common knowledge that the build records prior to 1976 could/had not been found. Jim not only gave us access to ALL GM locations, he used his position via a written directive that allowed us to get full and timely responses from every group that we contacted.

Your connections with GM big wigs is impressive, but I don't remember Pete mentioning your name.................did I mention that he was one of my best friend, at GM, brother-in-law. .....sorry, I couldn't resist.
