That's one that I've never heard, but I can ask the guys on Team Chevelle.
It WAS the very first year for the 12bolt rear, and the posi units were made by Eaton, so, if they didn't have a posi, maybe it's because Eaton had not yet built one to fit the 12bolt housing.
    Good question.

that is true and one thing I did learn over at TeamChevelle after I made a comment about a 12 bolt rear that was not a posi so it must not have come from a Z16. then all of the Z16 owners came out of the woodwork over there and set me straight

Yep, the Z16 knowledgeable Chevelle folks say the only rear gear was a 3.31 NON-posi.
So now, I have to go back and ask if the 65 Chevelles with the L79 came with a 12bolt posi.

Tom the SS package got you the heavy duty 12 bolt rear. but the G80 posi was always a option

I don't know if this is relevent to Chevelles but I tried to order a positraction rear end in my 1965 Impala (396, 325 horse, turbohydro). The car was delivered in May 1965 without positraction which was on stop order for some reason. Since the 396 only became available in February 1965, the time frame for the Z16 Chevelles would have been about the same.

When I discussed it with the original owner, who bought the car from the Chevrolet Eng fleet sale, (I was running a chassis dyno with the car on it about two feet away from me at one time, so I'm reasonably able to verify the car did exist) He said he sold it after a year or so to a guy who was known for "riding hard and putting away wet" and he had tried to track id down without success over the years (this was late 80's discussion) It's a legit argument as to if a car "converted" by Chevrolet qualifies, but that is the way is was sold when it left GM.

I was able to get Posi-Traction in my 1965 Impala -- no problem. I can't remember what time of year I got it, and I don't think I have any paperwork left from that car. Maybe the fact it was a 327 had something to do with it.
