Back in the day (60's or 70's), if you left your car unlocked, the neighborhood kids WOULD eventually steal the dash knobs out of it. Most people would go to the junkyard or dealer to get replacements. If the were the right ones, fine; otherwise, anything that fit would be good enough. When these were just used cars, people didn't care if replacement parts were 100% correct; all that mattered is that they fit.- Top

Those are words of wisdom. All too often, 40+ years later, we agonize about whether our cars are an anomaly because of some parts difference, when it was probably caused by what you just said.
