    Leaving Monday For Bonneville

Mike # 14 Mcagh, KC Strawmyre and myself will be leaving Carlisle and Cumberland on Monday for the long trek to the Bonneville Salt Flats. We made the mistake of stopping there last year on the way the the Bend NCRS meet and we got hooked. The last year was spent building a modified 56 Corvette
to run at the Salt Flats.
Any West Coasters that may be going are welcome to stop by our pits and say hi. We may need the moral support.

And if I didn't have so much on my plate right now with daughter getting married, magazine deadline fast approaching, and other things...I'd be there with you guys doing the cooking!!! There WILL be a story on the trip and the build in an upcoming issue of The Restorer

Great looking car and have a great trip with great success. You guys are living out loud and I admire that. Wish I could sneak over there from Denver. Seems like a short hike compared to you guys. Best of luck!
      It's a good life!

Have a great time!!! I had to cancel my trip with the fellow I bought my '57 from due to a deadline.. I probably don't need to tell you about the little restaurant near the entrance. A great little place with good food and a very low price. A few years ago we ate with a 70+ bike record holder was drafted the day of the run because he was the smallest guy they could find.

p.s. If you tell the casino reservationist you ar ethere to gamble and not going to "those races" it is usually good for a room discount and a comp or two.

Youse guys are livin' life large! Have a large time. From what I know about your car, you will take the title of the "Fastest '56 Corvette" from the late Forrest Shropshire. 'course his car did not fit any recognized class at Bonneville when he ran.

                  Re: Leaving Monday For Bonneville

Guys, is this the same '56 Bonneville car that was in Vette Vues years ago??

Bonneville is a great one to have on your bucket list. Problem is you get hooked and like Corvettes, dogs and potato chips can't have just one. The cars in the parking lot at the casino are as interesting as the ones running. Talked to a guy one evening on a rat HD panhead scooter who was from LA. He got up one morning and decided to head for Bonneville. A bit worn and dirty but he was a happy guy. Also saw a rat T-bucket with Packard straight 8 with 8 Strombergs and a Hone OD (). Alot of interesting homebuilts there with great stories.

Have a great time---it will be hard not to

You guys will have a blast !

Have a great time and we hope to see someone sporting a 200 mph club shirt. 'bout as hard to get as NCRS TF and costs lots $$$$'s more.

Went out to the flats in the late 60's when Bill Hielscher (deceased) set several records with his yellow '66 small block vert which was really a 1/4 mile car. Bill changed the rear gears bolted on the skinnies and if memory serves set 2 or 3 records including breaking one that the Studebaker Avantis had established.

Now I wanna go too !!!

                      Re: Leaving Monday For Bonneville

I would go again in a heart beat -- especially to watch someone I know run.

One of the best two days of my life were a visit to Speed Week when coming home from one of the Western Conventions. Gary Hodges tipped me to the place to eat -- a small steak joint down by the RR tracks, and we (the whole family) dined at a table next to some of the Hot Roding World's notables. Good steak too.

We slept overnight in Orange Crush (before it was Orange -- it still had the fake wood on the sides ) because there was no room at the Inn in Wendover. We went with the parade out to the flats the next morning for the record runs. Real friendly people, and a great time was had by all. I have passed by twice since and regret stopping each time. There is always some place to go and a time to be there. If I could get off work, I would do it again.

Best of luck to you gus, and stay safe.
                      Terry

how about taking some video so the rest of us can get a real feel for the trip?
                          Good luck!!

I remember there last year when the Goldenrod's 45 year old speed record was finally beaten. A great place to watch fast cars.

                              Re: Leaving Monday For Bonneville

Thanks for the responses guys. A few NCRS members are flying out to Bonneville to join us and I would not be surprised to see other members show up. I regret having Vinnie miss the event, but we will just have to settle for some second class food until he can come to our next event. We do not have any illusions of breaking our class record.
The record is 246 MPH. We have a lot of work to do before we can reach that point.
The red 56 Corvette of Forest Shropshire's was probably an inspiration.
I think that he ran a 170-+ with a 265 engine some time in the 80,s.
He had it on display in Cypress in 1988.
I think that we will have a good time if Mike doesn't forget the adult beverages.
