How does SL diesel compare to the CJ4, same, better or worse for our cars, thanks.

The 'S' in 'SL' is for spark engines. The 'C' in 'CJ' is for compression engines, ie. diesels. I think.- Top

Series III oil was basically for Detroit Diesel two stroke cycle engines. I do not remember the main diferences but I do know that it had a lower ash content. If you put good oil in those old engines, you might as well carry a five gallon bucket with you for add oilDick Whittington- Top

There were specific API C-category specs for those old Detroit Diesel two-strokes, but I believe they are long obsolete.
I know there are a lot of old Detroit Diesel two-strokes still in marine service, but I have no idea what currently available oil they should use.
"Low ash" means low additive levels since it's the additives that leave ash, not the base oils. So "low ash" is a no-no for vintage automotive engines with sliding surface valve trains that you want to last. This includes current aviation oils and old two-stroke diesel oils.
