    C2 1965 Starter Bolts

Sorting my bolts to be replated for my 65 the JM states that "2 black phosphate recessed plated hex head bolts" hold the starter in place.

My 2 originals look to be cad or zinc and this is what I am going with.

Is there ny other wrong bolt finish information in the 65 JM that anyone is aware of?

    Thanks.

    Jim------

I have never seen any GM starter bolts that were anything but cadmium or zinc plated. Maybe there were some that were phosphate-finished but, if so, I have no recollection of seeing any.

      Jimmy,

They should be grade eight bolts FWIW, I think my 63 starter bolts are grade five so grade eight must have started in 64.

        Jim,

I suspect that the 1965 JG is wrong on this point. I checked the AIMs, and found the following:

1963-1967 all use the same starter motor Inboard Bolt, GM 3830134
1965-1967 use the same starter motor Outboard Bolt, GM 3880880
(1963 & 1964 each used different Outboard bolts)

Checking the Judging Guides, 1966 & 1967 make no mention of finish on the starter motor bolts. 1965 says black phosphate as you mentioned, and 1963-64 says "two cadmium or zinc plated recessed hex-head bolts" (p. 135).

Of the two starter motor bolts on my '67 small block, I think one is original and one is a replacement. Both appear to be cad or zinc plated.

GM 3830134 Inboard bolt (long bolt, replacement): 3/8-16 x 4-11/16” with "Z" headmark, Grade 5

GM 3880880 Outboard bolt (short bolt, may be original): 3/8-16 x 1-7/8” with "C" headmark, Grade 8

My notes show that the current replacements are GM 14097278 and 14097279, but have not checked them recently, may be discontinued.

The P&A says 3880880 is zinc, 300-M (Grade 8), the listing for 3830134 does not specify grade or finish.
