Repo fuel pumps
Have to love them. They can keep you busy wrenching on the car. Took the '62 out for a ride on Fri. night. I had gone through the whole car in 2008. While doing so, I rebuilt the original fuel pump, I mean original fuel pump to the car, and placed in a box in the trunk. To drive the car, I bought a repo. pump that looks pretty close to the original, but there are obvious differences. Anyhow, that fuel pump lasted about 3 mos. and 500 miles. Oh, well I thought, even new isn't always reliable. So I called the vendor I got it from and they said to send it back and a new one would be in the mail. Can't beat that! Good people to do business with! After all, they didn't make the pump, but they do need to hear about products they market that will let you down. Anyhow, I put the new fuel pump in and then after 1500 miles and 3 yrs. I am along the road again, because of fuel pump failure. I know, nothing lasts forever, but still....... The lucky part is where it happened. It happened as I was driving past the body man I use, so I wheeled into his driveway to get off of the road. He saw me there and we looked to see what was the problem and it definitely was the fuel pump. He said, "if we had a pump, we could get you going real quick". I said no problem, I have a fuel pump in the trunk. An hour later I was driving home. So, do I rebuild the repo fuel pump for a spare or don't worry about it. Someone had said they will all go bad from just sitting. Probably so, but by the looks of the original fuel pump I rebuilt in 2008, I am not sure it was ever apart until then! I know the car was off the road for 20yrs. since it was new.

Dave...I drive my 56 and my 65 quite regularly. I have been thru 3 fuel on the 56 pumps on over approx 10,000 miles. No fuel pumps yet on the 65 in maybe 5000 miles. someone told me the pumps can die just because of non use. regular or repro may be just the luck of the draw...Bryan Hepper -

yes...i expect to be stranded as much as you do...have a spare pump for both..a repro for the 65 and the original Ac for the 56...a repro is on the 56 and the original on the 65...does that help? MOX NIX as my german dad would say...Comment

...I wonder how ethanol in today's fuel may be playing a big part in this? You should see what this stuff does to the rubber railroad tank car gaskets that I unload that contain ethanol. Sometimes not so pretty.Comment

Paul,,,I run only high test in my 2 old vettes. This doesnt contain any Ethanol. it may be more expensive but it supposedly has less moisute content(water) and is supposedly more like the old gas.Comment

I called the vendor that I got the repo pump from to make sure that their rebuild kit was compatible with that pump. Of course it is, but in this world, you never know. He said if you are getting 3yrs. out of a fuel pump after only running 1500 miles, you are doing better than most. I guess I better get that pump rebuilt so I am not sitting by the road! Has anyone found a brand of rebuild kit better than another? I am pretty sure that they are all made by the same people. I did try at my local auto parts stores. They can't get rebuild kits for fuel pumps anymore.Comment

Dave - You just have to love them when they say to you "you did better than most" and then I say to myself "they really don't care or want to have to deal with me on this and they are hoping I'll just go away." "Better than most" but unfortunately, of course, they really don't have any data to support their statement and prove you did "better than most" and there is very little you can do about it. if you are not having it judged go to a Repro and see how long that lasts. it can only make it easier for you i think. ask your service stations about ethanol in what grade of fuels too. wish you best of luck

Bryan, it was the repo's that failed. This is the 2nd one. Currently I am running with the original fuel pump, but I had rebuilt it and carried in the trunk as a spare. Now I will rebuild the repo and carry it as a spare. For fuel, I am running the standard 91 octane low lead at the pumps and that is mixed with about 30% 100 octane low lead avgas.Comment

did you read yesterday's article on Ethanol? Gentleman in Detroit says his business in fuel lines and pumps has jumped with Ethanol intorduction. apparently the alcohol destroys pumps and ruins fuel lines.Comment

Yes, I have read that. I have read elsewhere though that there are materials used they can survive ethanol. So I asked the vendor if their parts were of that material. I got no response.Comment

There are most certainly materials that are compatible with ethanol- they've been used at the OEM and aftermarket levels for probably 20 years if not more. With few exceptions, non-compatible materials are no longer on the market place.
Without knowing what actually went wrong with your two pumps, presuming that it's once again the evil ethanol might be a case of going down the wrong path.
I've been using E10 in my car since the early 90s and have experienced none of the fabled side effects.
