How to move the headlight motor switch to the right slot on an A/C car

I just realized that the headlight motor switch is supposed to be mounted in the inboard slot if the car has factory A/C. However it appears to me that in order to get it in that slot, one would have to pull the cluster out at least 2 or 3 inches since there is a bracket right behind the cluster where the trip reset knob is mounted. Am I missing something obvious here?

On an AC car the ears on the headlight switch mount under the cluster. See if that makes a difference.

The switch will definitely mount with the ears under the dash, but are you sure that's right? At the last judging meet, the interior judge pointed out that the ears should be above the lower edge of the dash, and then it was mounted in the left slot.

The judge was thinking of a non-AC car. I have a 63 AC car and it is below and last month I judged a 66 AC car and it was below.

An AC car is the exception to the rule on the headlight switch mounting.

Thanks very much for that feedback. I was thinking about how to get the cluster out (again) to mount it the other way, and not looking forward to that job! I have three A/C cars, and the switch is not in the right place on any of them!

Take a look at the AIM. I know on page 250 + or - the 63 AIM shows to mount the switch under the cluster.

I found the reference in my AIM (I'm working on a '67) on page 296 where it clearly shows the switch mounted under the cluster - but here's the rub - the page is stamped "canceled" as of 8-22-66. And I can't find any other reference to the switch mounting. So I think I'll go with this!!

I believe it belongs in the normal location (outboard) with the tabs above the cluster housing.

                    Nick,
I can just barely see the edge of the headlight switch in the very right side of your photo.
However, I can't find any documented guidance to support that the switch should not be on the outboard side of the Instrument Cluster or that the tabs are not below the Instrument Cluster housing. As previously stated by Robert Behlman, the AIM shows it on page C60 E7 as being mounted outboard with the tabs below the Instrument Cluster but the page has "cancelled" stamped on it. Should I assume then that the mounting location would remain in the same as a non a/c car? Where else can I look for information on the mounting location. Before disassembly mine was located outboard with the tabs below the Instrument Cluster

The location for the headlight motor switch (both with and without C60) in the 1966 Judging Guide is on page 30.

The location for the same info in the 1967 Judging Guide is p. 38.

They both say the switch is located at the inboard position on C60 cars.

                        Hi Scott,
Thanks for the references to the Judging Manual. Does it say if the ears on the switch are positioned above or below the instrument Cluster?

The judging guide does not address how it should be mounted, only where. Back to the AIM C60 E7 page that was cancelled, in looking at that page, it was cancelled because the drivers side vent control was relocated to the radio side panel. That page clearly shows the switch mounted to the inboard slot with the switch tabs under the cluster.

my 67 air/over the conv. SN 8706 is mounted outboard over the crome AC duct hole & I beleave it was always there. The 40/air coupe was also in the same place. If inboard how would you get to the trip reset?

                              Ken,

In Nick's picture above (post 9), isn't that the Trip Odomoeter reset knob below and forward of the (side view) of the headlight motor switch? If so, it doesn't look like there's any interference between the two.
