C1 (1960) need fan blade mounting bolts

I'm looking for bolts to mount the fan blade assembly to the water pump on a 1960 corvette. This is the plain fan with the spacer which I think was unique to 1960 (not the fan clutch option).

The AIM shows number 454892 for the bolt and lock washer 120214. They are 5/16"-24 X either 1 1/4" or 1 1/2". According to the 1958-60 Corvette Restoration Handbook, they are "UR" headmark Black Grade 8 bolts.

Can anyone tell me which length is correct?

I've looked at all the obvious parts sellers but they only list the short bolts (no spacer behind the fan). I've also sent an email Richard Fortier. Does anyone have another source suggestion?

    Thanks,

    Don

Doc Rebuild had a set of NOS bolts and lock washers for $9.50 and they are listed for fan with spacer. They are black plated, but it doesn't look like they are UR bolts. I don't think the mechanical judges look at the fan bolt heads with a mirror, but I am not certain.

I saw those listed in his catalog and called, but the lady was not able to tell me what they were, e.g. size, etc., and yes I call the correct phone number.

How do you know they are black plated? and do you know if the are the correct length? I'm not worried so much about the headmark, but more so on length and plating.

Dr. Rebuild has a $20 minumum so I kind of want to know how correct they are before I have to buy something else to make of $20 just to get 4 bolts that may or my not be correct.

If these are not checked that closely in judging, I may just go the hardware store route!!!!

Since you know the size and configuration try your local Ace Hardware, Fastenal Fasteners or industrial supply.
        Probably a few$$.

That's my likely solution. I was just trying to see if anyone had correct ones.

Did Mr. Fortier reply? He's aware of a fairly unique head-mark for this application.

Not yet. I tried to call earlier today, but decided to just send an Email.

I removed one of my bolts and it is a grade 8 "TR" head; 2-11/16"-24 with 7/8" of threads at the end. Mine are no longer black plated because I buffed the plating off with a steel wire wheel for some unknown reason. The 2-11/16" length is from the bottom of the head to the tip of the bolt. A 2/3/4" long bolt would probably work just fine. Hope this helps.

The diameter of the bolt is 5/16". After looking at the bolts in the Paragon catalog, I suspect that I purchased a set of 4 from Paragon and they are not black plated. A judge could certainly take a mirror and light to look at the head markings, but the head markings are not listed in the judging guide.

Where did you find the longer bolts in Paragon catalog? I can only find part number 324K, 4956K, and 4957K listed as fan blade mounting bolts in the Paragon catalog, and they are all 3/4" length, but different headmarkings. In the diagram of the fan blade with spacer, these three bolt number are listed but with a not w/o spacer.

I was not able to find any longer bolts that Paragon had listed?

                    Thanks,

Re: C1 (1960) need fan blade mounting bolts

OK, I spoke to Mr. Fortier and now I have another question. He thinks the bolts should be something like 3 1\2" long, but that length would be way to long to mount my fan.

My spacer is just slightly over 1 1/2" in length and has part number casting of 3857041. The AIM shows part number 3754905. So looks like I don't have an original spacer, but is it a correct length?

Joe, do you know if you have a correct spacer? If so, is there anyway you can measure the depth/length of it? I may start another thread to see if anyone can help cross reference the two part number, the one on my spacer versus the one in the AIM.

                      Thanks,

I have an original aluminum spacer and the bolts are not that long. I looked up the bolt on the Fastenal web site and it is Item 18060, 1-3/4" long, 5/16" dia, 24 threads per inch, No. 8, plain steel. My spacer is approximately 1-7/8" long.

Phillip, how long is your spacer?

My bolts are not that long, but have the same Grade 8 markings and TR head mark.

Donald, take a few deep breaths; you will eventually get the info you need and are comfortable with.

I just found and ordered the correct spacer off Ebay. Just another of the many things that have been wrong with my car that I have found out about in the late stages of this restoration. I think I will just buy some Grade 8 hardware store bolts if I can find the 5/16-24 thread count in the right length. If I can't then Richard Fortier said he could produce some.

                              Thanks to all,
