I have my dash out for my 63 to have the odemeter repaired and noted on the back of my tach a electric plug as it appears. and nothing attached. I remember reading that there was a production cut off somewhere for the tach. warning buzzer opition .would they have still had the same production tach. used without the buzzer? is this something some of you 63 guys have seen before.I can tell you for certain that this dash was never out before. My car is a March car. Thanks for your input Ed

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
Ed, as with most 63 questions, there are a lot of opinions and no hard answers...but I'll give you my two cents:
Most early cars, maybe through December, had a buzzer, harness, and buzzer tach. Its possible some even worked, though very few people ever heard one buzz.
Some claim that all buzzer tachs on those early cars had a distinctive red/maroon (or something like that) "red-line". Others say no,there were also some yellow/orange ones. I've seen both.
After January 1 (or maybe a bit earlier) many cars had no harness, but they did still have a buzzer and buzzer tach. These tended not to buzz very often. The guys on the line must've got a bunch of yucks as they put the buzzers on cars with no harnesses.
I have a November car with a buzzer, no harness, and an orange/yellow striped buzzer tach. Its early enough that it probably had a harness once upon a time. Maybe someone raced my car a lot and took the harness off to shut up the buzzer at red line. That's doubtful, though, 'cause the car is so noisy at red line, I'd never hear it anyhow. Its more likely the line operator (or a later Bubba) forgot to put it on. I need a harness....
Later cars, after March, lost the buzzer and the harness, but still had the yellow/orange buzzer tach. My April car (13696) is like that. Still silent.
Finally, some time in late April or May the last of the buzzer tachs must've run out.
Someone, I'm sure, has a car with yet another combination. They will undoubtedly chime in here soon. I believe them.
As you see its all possible. Oh well that's what you get for owning a 63...
Happy New Year to all....- Top

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
Thanks for all the replys I will chauk this up to yet another 63 change. I though it was a interesting post as like everything with 63 seems to be you cannot nail anything down with changes that came about. I think when the new 63/64 manuel comes about I will sit down and write myself a list of changes that happen in our model year. there seems to be so many.it would be nice to have a quick reference.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
Hard to recall all the parts changed on my 63 since I bought it many years ago. I should tell you that the buzzer tach in my 63 was a NOS one out of the box. Has the different colors for the red line. The tach is NOT correct for my March 2nd car.
The original tach is around here and has the typical colors. It was not a buzzer tach. So I should not have contributed to the post above as my tach is a replacement part bought over the counter from Chevy in late 70's. JD- Top

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
Where is the buzzer tach harness connected to? I have #3532 and it has the tach, buzzer, but no harness. The dash has been out of the car before so I have not ruled out the removal of the original harness. Opinions? After searching the archives, it looks to be I could have the tach, buzzer, but no harness. Tim- Top

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
the harness connects to the back of the tach on one end, and to the buzzer box on its other end.my early dec 63 had the buzzer tach and the buzzer but no harness. the cluster had never been out of it before me. i made up a bubba harness and then started the 360 engine. couldn't hear squat. then i took a drill motor to energize the tach, with the engine off, and could hear the buzzer--but barely. mike- Top

Re: 63 Tach warning buzzer question
Tim, the harness connects to a small pin inside a hole in the back of the cluster. The hole is shown in the pics in post #10. The center RH pic shows the pin. The hole is shown in the top pic, it is the small hole, above and to the left of the tach cable connection, just above the screw head. If you want one, I believe the harness is (or was) available from Lectric Limited.
It might be futile to put it on, though, as Mike said, you'd never hear it at red line. Since nobody checks for it in judging, or even knows if it should have been there in the first place on your car, I'd leave it off, as I did on car 3922.- Top
