What should I expect with a repop, rebuilt Fuel Pump?

I just received the fuel pump for my 69 L36 and I'm not sure what to think of it.

The vendor that I bought it from describes it as "1968-1969 Correct fuel pump with part number and "AC" cast in top." and the pic of it looks like its a quality unit with no cosmetic defects.

However once I opened the box I see that the alloy casting is pitting in several areas and one area is so bad that I can't believe that it isn't all the way through the housing. Also, the yellow cad plating on the steel portion is either coming off or so poorly prepped that it didn't plate properly over a very noticeable area. I can't post pics for some reason so I'll try my old Photobucket account and hope you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Is this all I can expect for a repop/restored pump or should I send it back as defective?

    Thanks

    Hi Greg,

I think you can expect a better fuel pump than that, especially on the plated portion. It will never look any better than it does now and would most likely lose condition point(s) right out of the box.

      Greg,

Just my opinion but If I had paid the going rate for a repro 40659 fuel pump (~$140), I would not accept that unit.

        Hi Greg,
I feel the same as Terry and Floyd.
Even if we can agree that the pump will WORK perfectly for ever, I'd be too disappointed with it's cosmetic appearance and condition to install it.
        Regards,

Curious , I was. Told by some elders that those fuel pumps cannot be rebuilt unlike the early years. Is 40659 the correct part number ? There are still NOS out there. I'll check

There are two on Fleabay $360, and $180, dated. Good luck.

Greg, No wonder you are concerned. What a POC. Make sure you buy a fuel pump ready for ethanol. John

I purchased a NOS fuel pump for my L-46, I'm not sure how old the pump is, my question is the reliability of an older pump. When a pump diaphragm fails is there any chance of fuel entering the motor.

Re: What should I expect with a repop, rebuilt Fuel Pump?

IMO, if the diaphragm fails fuel will seep out of the vent holes and leave a tele-tale but if not repaired I guess it could get into the motor.

This pump pictured in post #1 looks like a original because of the vent hole location, the pitting shown in the top side will not interfere with operation so I think it's a usable core.

Greg, these rebuilt pumps need to be checked all the time as well as any fuel pump. We are used to taking them for granted because they rarely fail. Carry a fire extinguisher in the car for any emergency but I bet the pump will be fine.

Re: What should I expect with a repop, rebuilt Fuel Pump?

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought that maybe I was being too critical but obviously we're all thinking the same and it is unacceptable especially for the price I paid for it($200).

Jeff I think that the way they are rebuilding these is to repop the lower steel portion. They just cut off the old one and replace the parts inside and then crimp on the repop lower unit.

I'm more concerned about the diaphragm failing and leaving me on the side of the road than fuel getting in the oil. That is why I decided to get a "quality" repop pump instead of using my original one which I might say is way better looking than this one that I just got.

Now something else caught my eye on it today. Is anyone restamping these things??? I looked closer at the stamping and where it is stamped the casting is concave where as on my original pump it is straight. You can also see that the end characters are deeper than the middle ones because of the concave surface AND on the end where the "FG" is you can see the semi-circular remains of what might be left from grinding in the area. I will not be impressed if this is a restamp!

Purchased a new pump from Paragon last year. It looked nothing like the pics posted here. Looked good and has performed the same so far. Got the one with AC logo and as I recall paid about the same. A $200 pump shouldn't look that bad.

To my knowledge this is an original pump I'm going to use on my 68. L79. It's stamped 238 K 40658. image.jpg
