    I don't think the web would be of value for normal service loads. My thinking is that it might have been added to stiffen the part for machining the strut/shock bracket bolt holes, or it may have simplied the forging process. (I think that part is forged.)

    Such changes to improve "manufacturability" are common.

      The spindle supports are not forged pieces. They are cast nodular iron.

        Well, at least they're nodular and not gray iron. A forged part could have been lighter, but it was probably a cost issue. I don't think those rear spindle supports have a significant failure rate, even in racing.

        I had mine Magnaflux inspected (along with the spindles) back in the seventies when I rebuilt the axle and rear suspension.
