Shipping data report - additional questions

    Hello all,

I am a new member of the NCRS and am seeking information on the history of my 1966 convertible. I ordered the shipping data report but unfortunately the informaion received did not solve the mystery. I know from the VIN that my car is among the very early 1966 model production (#711) and the report confirms this with a build date of September 15th, 1965. It also has an A.O. Smith body (#103) that was built on September 9, 1965.

The report indicates that the car was shipped to dealer #55 in zone #16. Sadly the only information regarding the dealer name is that it begins with the letter "B". Even more disappointing, dealer #55 is not in the NCRS database. The previous owner purchased the car in a private sale in 1988 in Summerville, SC. I searched for South Carolina dealers starting with "B" and then sorted them by distance from Summerville thinking it may have been a "local" car.

One reason I feel the car may not have traveled far from where it was delivered is the fact that it started life as a base model. No PS or PB and a 300hp 327ci with standard 3.36 rear axle. The only options appear to have been the AM/FM radio and Powerglide transmission. It also appears to have been a hardtop only car from the factory. So, pretty "plain Jane". Plus, when purchased in Summerville in 1988 it was only 22 years old so perhaps not far from its original dealer.

My best dealer guess at this point is Black Chevrolet in Walterboro, SC which is only 32 miles from Summerville. The NCRS dealer database indicates that Black was the dealer name in 1965 and 1967. The database also shows this dealer as #72 which contradicts the shipping report.

I realize that this may be an impossible quest but I would appreciate any input from members experienced with this sort of investigation. Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions!

    Bob,

Try looking for a Chevrolet dealer name that is alphabetically between BA and BE with South Carolina location back in 1965.
Try vintage telephone books for Sommerville car dealers and local newspapers and high school yearbooks,

at one time 16-054 was Barnes and Lee Chevrolet (BENSON SC) and 16-059 was Beasley-Cross (KANNAPOLIS SC)
both dealerships would be about a 3 hour drive from Summerville SC.

The key is following the dealer alphabetically not necessarily how close by distance. Looking with dealer names from 1965 that starts
with just the letter BA should narrow things down quickly for you.

    Good luck!
    Hugh

      Bob,
As I indicated it could have been delivered to a dealer in NC also. I know you have reasons to believe it went to SC but don't overlook that.
Also the Camaro and Chevelle guys have info on dealers and perhaps you could find something there.
      Good luck
      Mark

Re: Shipping data report - additional questions

Thank you Hugh and Mark for your responses to my questions. I am a bit surprised that there is no GM documentation cross referencing dealers, zones, and names that hasn't found its way into hobbyist hands over the years. Absent such info, if I understand correctly, the only way to determine a dealers name is if someone has reported the dealer number and associated name as shown on a historic document that was saved from the time of purchase. I will pursue my search with the understanding that my car may have migrated from anywhere within zone 16, including North Carolina to the Summerville SC area. Contacting public libraries for city directory lists of Chevrolet dealers that were active in 1965 seems like the next step.

          Bob,
The info we have for zone 16 is about 1966/1967 vintage. Since it was not in our book I wonder if they were out of business by then. Dealer 54 is Barnes & Lee Chevrolet for whatever that's worth.
