    Indiana VIN Search Tips?

Just found out my 65 was delivered to a dealer in Indiana. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions about trying to get a copy of the original title from the Indiana DMV. I read the DMV webpage, and it sounds like there is some sort of $50+ fees involved. I didn't want to spend the money if titles this old were not still around....

Thanks for any advice or experiences you may have had in this regard.

    Re: Indiana VIN Search Tips?

In 2006 I was able to trace my 70 back to the original owners through the Indiana DMV.

I think I did a registration search and they sent me a single line showing the second owner's registration from the mid-to-late 70s. And this was despite the fact that their search form said they only had records from 10 years previous.

At that time I believe the fee was only about $15.

The fee for an Indiana title history is only $8.00. But they say that all information is destroyed after 10 years. And they won't release "personal information" (such as the owner's name or address) unless you swear under penalty of perjury that you fall into one of several categories. If you hire a licensed private investigator, the PI is entitled to get the data . . . . Or you can claim that you need the information for research purposes, but then you're not allowed to contact the prior owners.

        Randal,
Another great way to find info when the dmv doesn't work is a friend in law enforcement. The info is there, it's just getting to it that's difficult.
        Good Luck,
        Chris
