I am new to Corvette ownership and NCRS. Growing up in Pittsburgh my first ride in a Corvette was when I was 15 and my Brother bought a red/saddle interior 1974 in 1975. When he and my then Sister-in-law would come over he was nice enough to let me wash it. I laugh at it now but at that time to be 15 and have 1 on 1 time with a Corvette. When I got my license he let me drive it up the street and back. He sold the car a couple years later, but I never forgot the expirience.
Flash forward to now and living in Richmond, VA. Over the years I never had an opportunity to even think about Corvette ownership until last year. I owned a 2006 Harley Davidson Road King, while I enjoyed the bike I realized I was a car person. With the blessing of my wife I put the Harley up for sale and started my search for a mid 70's Vette. I found a person in Frederick, MD that wanted to sell his '74 to buy a Harley. A few messages on the Corvette Forum, a couple phone calls, and a stop in Frederick, MD while on my way home from visiting my Dad in Pittsburgh and an even trade was made: 2006 Harley Road king for a 1974 Dark Brown/ Saddle L82-4 Spd in October of 2009.
I had a limited history on the car other than the couple copies of titles from Pennsylvania. I contacted the PA DMV and was able to get a history going back 10 years. The PA titles showed the car went to PA from New York around 1994. I contacted New York DMV and got nothing.
I thought I had hit a dead end, The tank sticker was still on the car. I dropped the tank and got it but it is unreadable- another dead end.
Then the shipping data report came up. The letter I got showed the car was sent to Bob Peck Chevrolet in Arlington, VA. All along I thought the car originated in New York. Now I have an chance at starting at the beginning with the Virginia DMV. I searched and found an article about the dealership closing in 2006. It listed the owner as Bob Peck's son Don. I searched under people finder and found a home address for Donald Peck. I sent a letter to him and just yesterday got a very nice response from him, however he said that when the dealership closed in 2006 all old records were destroyed.
Sorry for the long post but this has been a well spent $40 as I now know where my car originated- 90 miles from where I live now. It has lit a new fire for me for the search on the history of my Vette. If anyome lived in the Washington DC area and bought a 1974 Corvette from Bob Peck Chevrolet and then moved to New York, I may have your car.
Thank You NCRS for giving me a true beginning of my car.
Joe
