A little history and a well spent $40-- Sorry if it's a long post

I am new to Corvette ownership and NCRS. Growing up in Pittsburgh my first ride in a Corvette was when I was 15 and my Brother bought a red/saddle interior 1974 in 1975. When he and my then Sister-in-law would come over he was nice enough to let me wash it. I laugh at it now but at that time to be 15 and have 1 on 1 time with a Corvette. When I got my license he let me drive it up the street and back. He sold the car a couple years later, but I never forgot the expirience.

Flash forward to now and living in Richmond, VA. Over the years I never had an opportunity to even think about Corvette ownership until last year. I owned a 2006 Harley Davidson Road King, while I enjoyed the bike I realized I was a car person. With the blessing of my wife I put the Harley up for sale and started my search for a mid 70's Vette. I found a person in Frederick, MD that wanted to sell his '74 to buy a Harley. A few messages on the Corvette Forum, a couple phone calls, and a stop in Frederick, MD while on my way home from visiting my Dad in Pittsburgh and an even trade was made: 2006 Harley Road king for a 1974 Dark Brown/ Saddle L82-4 Spd in October of 2009.

I had a limited history on the car other than the couple copies of titles from Pennsylvania. I contacted the PA DMV and was able to get a history going back 10 years. The PA titles showed the car went to PA from New York around 1994. I contacted New York DMV and got nothing.

I thought I had hit a dead end, The tank sticker was still on the car. I dropped the tank and got it but it is unreadable- another dead end.

Then the shipping data report came up. The letter I got showed the car was sent to Bob Peck Chevrolet in Arlington, VA. All along I thought the car originated in New York. Now I have an chance at starting at the beginning with the Virginia DMV. I searched and found an article about the dealership closing in 2006. It listed the owner as Bob Peck's son Don. I searched under people finder and found a home address for Donald Peck. I sent a letter to him and just yesterday got a very nice response from him, however he said that when the dealership closed in 2006 all old records were destroyed.

Sorry for the long post but this has been a well spent $40 as I now know where my car originated- 90 miles from where I live now. It has lit a new fire for me for the search on the history of my Vette. If anyome lived in the Washington DC area and bought a 1974 Corvette from Bob Peck Chevrolet and then moved to New York, I may have your car.

Thank You NCRS for giving me a true beginning of my car.
    Joe

    Joesph..

I too received my Shipping Data Report from NCRS on my '73 LS4. Had some of the same surprises as you. I originally thought my car came from SC, but the data report show southside of Chicago then second owner was in SC.

I have been reading other postings on seaches. Many members have many good ideas.

I tried contacting the nearest library and yesterday was sent two pages in PDF format of the Chevrolet dealership advertisements in the local newspaper the Chicago Tribune from 1963 when the auto dealership opened.

The librarian also gave some history on the President and owner.

I also had my dealership's address off by a city block.

My dealership is still in business today at a different location and under a different name. I haven't contact them yet so I still still more to come hopfully.

    Keep searching and good luck

      Peter,
Thanks for the idea. I will contact the library in Arlington, VA to check for ads. It will be a great addition to the documentation.
On a side note, The letter Don Peck wrote to me was on the dealerships letterhead he must had lying around.

Contacted the Arlington, Va public library today. spoke to a person in the archive section. She was extemely helpful, told me Bob Peck Chevrolet was a very popular dealer. They are going to compile as much info as they can for me to include pictures and articles of the dealership, as well as any newspaper ads from the end of 1973 and the 1st quarter of 1974. My car has a date of 11/10/1973. If the car was not a special order and just dealer stock, I'm hoping it my show up in a newspaper ad.

Here is a picture of Bob Peck Chevrolet, circa 1964. The building became a landmark in Arlington, VA.

              Very cool Joseph!

I see how it became a "Historic Landmark".
