My shipping report had damaged microfiche and two possible dealers were listed. Any info out there on Sound Chevrolet in Morehead City, NC? The only thing I came up with is Kurtis Chevrolet who bought out a dealership that was located on Arendell Street downtown. No name was mentioned.
They were Sound Chevrolet then Packer Chevrolet then Bob Whitmoyer Chevrolet and finally Kurtis Chevrolet which moved out of the old building and built a modern dealership. I bought cars from most of them. I also test drove every Corvette they would let me behind the wheel of, couldn`t afford to buy one just test drove them. In the sixties they only got a very few Corvettes each year. Old dealership building is still there part fleamall and part private car collector. I probably have pics in the sixties. Mike
Hi Tom, I am looking for them. I have only found one taken in the showroom in 1967 with the new Cameros in there. There are plenty around Morehead though. I will find them and post in the next few days. Mike
Mike, thanks for the info so far. Old photos would be great. Like I said in my orginal post, Sound Chevrolet was one of the options on my delivery letter. Know of any employees back in 66? I have traced back to 1978 where the car was in Norfolk...not too far away.
I did a google map and saw the building and like you said had a fleemarket and car place in it.
Hi Tim, Sound Chevrolet was owned at that time and for many years by Marion Mills now deceased (which went on to open Marion Olds, Pontiac and Buick here in Morehead) The parts Manager was Major Jarman for many years, then Tom Williams for a period and then Mike Simpson until it was sold to Kurtis and moved to the West of town. Body shop manager was Hubert Perry during the late 60`s which eventually left to open Perrys Body Shop for himself. He is also deceased. Major Jarman I think is also deceased. There were many salesmen over the years but most are dead now. They usually got three or 4 Corvettes a year to sell. I will locate a picture for you ( they were a lot taken in those years) There is one particular one with a Corvette sitting in front of it I will try to locate for you. I remember a Red 66 conv but I do not remember a Blue one. I do remember a almost brand new 65 or 66 being wrecked here in the county that sat in another body shop for years. I came upon the wreck almost as it happened. Slide sideways off road and hit a tree and then caught fire(just a small fire) I helped put it out. The car had less than 1000 miles on it as I wondered why it wasn`t fixed a lot quicker. I never knew what actually became of that car. Colonial Chevrolet in Norfolk is about 200 miles from me. I work here but for a company based in Norfolk. I have stopped in there several times when I go to Norfolk. The car possibly could have been purchased by a US Marine as we have very large Marine bases here which also do have some Navy personnel but Norfolk is mainly Navy. I will try to remember someone that would have worked there in the sixtys that might remember the car. If you can think of any particular questions I might be able to remember. My senior yearbook has the picture of the Cameros in the showcase (1967) but they always had a big ad in the yearbooks. Maybe the 65 or 66 has one of the Corvettes. Thanks, Mike
Mike, I really appreciate the great info on the history of Sound Chevrolet and your memories. The past owner between '78-'89 sent me some photos of the car as he bought in '78 in Norfolk. One photo shows a Colonial dealer plate on the rear. I'll post a couple of those tomorrow as those are on my other computer. It had the top of the engine painted yellow, 67 stinger hood, no buumpers, tubular sidepipes, and mags. Thanks again Mike
As promised, here are some photos of my car as it looked after 1978. The only thing the previous owner did was remove the tubular sidepipes and put factory ones on. He had the car in the Norfolk area for less than 2 years before he moved to Michigan and was put in storage. I'm wondering if because it has a Colonial dealer nameplate on it, maybe the car was dealer traded from Sound to Colonial?
The yellow painted engine is very interesting!
Tim
Mike, cool photo. Looks to be 49-50 based on the dark car. The lighter one looks like a '48 Fleetline Aerosedan. Thanks for looking this up and posting. Look forward to any others. Tim
