Unger Motors (Chevrolet) Harwood, MD

Hello Everyone,

Just received my shipping data report and learned that my '69 was originally shipped to Unger Motors in Harwood, Maryland. As far as I can tell, this dealership folded or at some point was purchased, moved and renamed. So far, a flurry of internet research has turned up nothing about the dealership's existence.

Harwood appears to be sparsely populated. I'm hoping a friendly member from that area will remember them as the only Chevy dealer in town and possibly recognize my car (Silver on Gunmetal convertible) from their past.

I realize this is a long shot, but any information to help my search for information is greatly appreciated!

I sure don't see a thing on these guys in any of the Maryland records I looked at. There was an association of Maryland Chevrolet dealers formed in Hagerstown, MD in 1948. I have the address of the last known guy on the documents. I will send you a PM with his name and address. Might be of no help whatsoever, but it is all I can find.

After a deeper cyber dive I discovered the Harwood Civic Association website, which actually had a photo including the dealership. In the photo, I could see that Unger Motors was actually Ungar Motors, spelled "-ar" not "-er".

They were a truly small dealer in a largely rural farming area of Maryland that also sold John Deer equipment. As I understand things, they applied to transfer the dealership to the owner's son sometime in the 60's. GM declined saying Ungar Motors was not viable. They did allow the owner to continue selling cars, with little or no support, until the owner passed in 1979. After that it seems things deteriated into a law suit that didn't receive final judgement until 1992. Very interesting history with a little modern deja vu thrown in.

My next task is to get in touch with the Civic Association and ask if anyone can provide more info and maybe more photos, hoping that the original owner was from that area.

PS - my shipping data report uses the misspelled version of the dealer's name. Who do I contact to let them know the error exits? The error may be unlikely to impact many Corvette owners, but it would seem we want to have the details covered.

That new spelling might help. Let go back through the records !!! I'll let you know what I come up with.

Yup, that's the photo that did it for me! I think these guys were pretty obscure, so I'm really hoping the locals will be able to help. I'll post my findings after I talk to the folks that run the Civic association.
