I know that today a lot of vehicles get delivered to one dealership and then are sold thru other dealers for numerous reasons,how often did this happen in the sixties ??

My feeling is it wasn't as common, mainly because information systems were for the most part non-existing at dealerships in the sixties.
I'm pretty sure only way one could find out if a car was in inventory would have been to call other dealers and ask them if they had a certain car. It seems like this practice became more typical during the 1980's as more dealers came online and with the Japanese imports where lead times for cars became much longer for a specific make, model, color & options.
It would be fun to know how an actual order was transfered to the factory when someone orders a car during that time period. It seem like I remember seeing some type of teletype device at a dealer when I was a kid.
I know during the mid-1970’s dealers were connected to the factory. I had the VIN for my new ’76 Corvette prior delivery to the dealership.

robert, i own a 1968 z28 camaro that i bought new at a small dealership. it was dealer traded for me. back in 1968 this small dealer did most all paper work
hand written(dealer order form, sales order form, and purchase agreement). i have original p-0-p booklet too. it was not stamped with dealer zone
and number until after it sold because it is stamped from dealer i purchased from.
i remember the dealer calling around and came up with the vehicle located 11/2 hours away and they sent parts mgr with the trade car
and he drove my car back. maybe this will help.

I talked recently with a dealer who sold 100+ new Corvettes per year in the late 60's and early 70's. Because they had trouble getting enough from GM, they worked many dealer trades. They would, in fact, because inventories were not computerized, "assign" cars to a dealership that didn't keep their inventory reports current with GM, and indicate to GM they were sold in hopes they could get more. They also worked with neighboring dealers to order new from GM, and then bought them from those dealers. The article I I'd on the 3 late 71 LT-1s indicates that the protecto plates with 2 of those cars were not from the dealer that ordered them.Last edited by Mike E.; March 2, 2013, 11:07 PM.- Top
