I couldn't resist posting this because it might be of interest to somone with an early NOM '64. Having the wrong serial number on the pad is only a 25 point deduction (out of 350 total for the block).

Seller calls it a '63 but pad suggests 64. Seller says original car was wrecked.

I do not know the seller and I do not know anything about this other than what the listing says.

For an NCRS member, I think the best match for this engine would be a NOM '64 where the block's casting date and assembly date fall within the "6 month rule" that allows the engine to be built up to six months before the car was asembled. This would allow the block to get 325 out of 350 points assigned to the block (just a 25 point deduction for the non-matching VIN derivative on the pad).

Just to be clear, no NCRS judge will be fooled into thinking this engine is original to the car. Rather, by applying the standard judging rules, most of the points for the block could be obtained. Several years ago, Mark Lincoln wrote a Restorer article called "Duntov Without the Numbers," where he used another Corvette engine with a slightly different serial number and still managed to get a Duntov award.

In Mark's case he was able to provide evidence that the original engine for the car was the same horsepower as the replacement engine. That might be harder to do for some people who presently have a NOM '64 and and want to use the ebay engine. However, I am not sure how the judging gets handled if there is no available proof whatsoever that shows what engine the car was originally equipped with. I suspect that the judges have to give the owner the benefit of the doubt. That would certainly be the case for normal Flight judging, but maybe Duntov judging would use a different standard.

My "prior" 1963 Z06 was awarded Duntov w/o original motor - VIN on stamppad was about 3900 from VIN of car
