    Shorter Login Names

The need to use our full name and member number in parentheses is too cumbersome.

    Re: Shorter Login Names

    Steve,

This is an old topic that has been discussed several times. There is good reasoning behind our username convention. Back when the only thing we needed to log in for was the Technical Discussion Board we started off with handles that members chose. This allowed people to post with relative anonymity and there were a lot of posts that were completely out of line. We then decided that in order to keep the Technical Discussion Board civil it was best that members use there own name. People are lot more civil when they are identifiable. Well that presented a problem as we have several members who have the same first and last names and of course you can't have two users with the same username.. John Jones, Bill Smith etc. The membership number appended to the name then allowed people with the same name to still be identified with different usernames.

It is a little less convenient but cookies will remember your username and password and you would rarely need to actually log in if you set the Remember Me box when you log in.

I hope this at least explains the why.

You don't see Joe Ray complaining about a shorter name. LOL

Cookies are as secure as the programmer, we have encrypted all relevant keys in our cookies...

Can you elaborate on why you think the cookie mechanism in not secure in other manners?

Unfortunately no cookies on iPad and its a lot to type each time. Still don't understand why a user can't have a login alias that just maps to your name & number. No one would be anonymous that way.

              Steve,

My iPad remembers my login from both Chrome and Safari. Check your iPad settings.
