Post Edit Timeout - Arghh !!!!

I am extremely frustrated. Please excuse my potentially slightly abrasive attitude, but I am really perturbed about this. In my professional computer oriented hardware AND software career experiences, there exists a major Bug in the vBulletin software that should be addressed.

We have a 720 minute Timeout to allow editing of posts. Okay, it is what it is, but this is what just happened to me.

I just edited a post from yesterday. I wasn't sure if I reached timeout or not, so when I clicked "EDIT", it let me "edit". Okay, I'm good to go. So I spent about 30 minutes or so editing the file, adding photos and a very detailed description of my restoration work. I then clicked "Submit".

Well, the Timeout must have occurred DURING my edits, and I LOST the Entire Edit. 30+ minutes of effort........GONE !!!

The Bug is simply this.........If a user is allowed to Edit a post, then regardless of the TImeout end period, the Timeout should be voided for the duration of the edit and allow submission. Geesh I'm still upset.

Another suggestion please........Make the Timeout 24 hours, not 12 hours. Or for that matter, why do we really need a Timeout anyway. Every other Forum I can think of has Edit capability forever. I really don't understand why we can't edit posts to correct errors and clarify information.

Post with errors can be misleading and readers of errors are misinformed. If the error is corrected in a later post, and the user never sees the correction, the errors continue forever.

Okay, my blood pressure is going down. I'll just go relax now.

I didn't want to file a Ticket and bother anybody over the weekend, but I had to vent, so I did that here. Gary and John don't need to be bothered with this. It's a bug in the Shell SW we use and it'll likely never get changed by the source developers.

Yes, I'm still frustrated and was going to redo the entire post this morning.....but I'm just not feeling like doing it all over again. I need a few days to forget what I lost and I'll do it over I guess.

can you imagine just how boring life would be without all the infuriating aggravations that come at you at the worst possible times?
As an example, Gary would not have seen the Help Ticket you could have filed (as you say there is no 'help' for this bug) because his internet has been out since Saturday. He might get back on line tomorrow.
So, hang in and enjoy your holiday today. Remember, it could always be worse!

Hi Don, I just chuckled when I read your post. Made me feel better. Yesterday I spent the day cutting grass and pressure washing stuff around the house. I took my frustrations out on weeds and shootin' my water gun at dirt.

Wow, Gary's off the wire? Yikes I hate when that happens to me too. Tell him to call me. Maybe I can do a "Remote Fix" over the phone! I used to do that in the 70's and 80's fixin' computers and test equipment, talking the customer through the diagnosis process. Ah, the good ole' days.....NOT.

Today, you Google it up and find stuff in milliseconds. In fact, when I do that think I may still be passin' packets through hardware I helped design for big internet routers when I was with Nortel Networks, and it's predecessors which I worked for before the acquisition. But on second thought, I hope Gary's problem isn't a hardware bug in one of the Network Processors or other IC's I helped build!

            Richard,

Often when you go back to re-post the lost posting you will find a button at the bottom of the text box to restore your lost post. I have used that many times. As you are writing your post you will see a blink of text in the bottom left corner "Auto Saved" or something like that. The system remembers what you typed and will restore it for you when you come back.

I hope that works for you this time.

Thanks John, I immediately went back after I got the Timeout error, looking for the "Restore Auto Saved Content" button, but it wasn't there. Probably because it Timed out, the Auto Save function was disabled.

                Hang in there Rich,

It's OTS software that's MD'd and we can't change other than options. It is what it is.

My Internet problem was multifaceted; 1) flakey DSLAM port, 2) unbalanced cable pair with tip going to ground intermittently. Signal-to-noise ratio is improved greater than 20db and signal level improved over 4 db. Lose half power every 3db.

You know the stuff you did with Moto, its shelf life was no more 3 years due to redesign and smaller chip footprints.

Gary, I'm okay. Over it now. I'm getting back in the mood to retype my post with all of those photos I'd described in detail. I usually type and copy/paste into a backup Word file as I do the long restoration posts, but for some reason I forgot to the other morning.

Glad you're all fixed up. Ahhhhh, the multiple problem syndrome. I hate when that happens.

I had a similar issue after a T-Storm when the active Port on my source router running Cat 5 cable out to my shop hub got fried. Metal building so wireless is unusable. Amazingly it did not destroy the entire router and a simple cable swap to a spare port got it fixed. I have a 4 Port Hub in the shop that the router talks to and that was unscathed for some reason. That little Cisco Hub has been with me since the late 90's and still ticking.

Yes the smaller networking systems had a short life as the technology advanced. The LSI Logic, Motorola and IBM ASICs we did were replaced with newer designs typically ever 18 months or less, but many were new revs of the designs using that newer faster smaller aspect ratio sub-micron technology. Funny, I was around when 1 micron and sub-micron, then .1 micron was the latest. Not sure what's around these days as I haven't followed the industry but now may measured in Angstroms these days. Some of the huge Enterprise Routers we did stayed in place for much longer. But you're right, those were probably sent off to scrappers and auctioned off for pennies per dollar.

PS I'm heading to the Nationals this year so hope to catch up. See you then.
