Re: Reading Post Problems - Am I the Only One
John, Yes I think I follow all the methods and their results, but I just did some more experiments in the Test forum. Here
When I use the Reply or Reply with Quote button(bottom of the post, Not Top/Bottom "+Reply to Thread"), in Hybrid mode after Submit it puts it right after that post, embedded in the thread. Test Forum Example above replying to post#5.
Still in Thread view, I simply switch the Display to Linear mode, that same reply is now at the end of the thread. See post#6 is the reply to post#5.
If I switch back to Hybrid mode, it puts it back in the middle of the thread after post#5.
However, when I do this same operation and process on the very first post in the new thread, Post#1, it ALWAYS puts the Replies at the END of the Thread, Hybrid OR Linear using either Reply or Reply with Quote button(bottom of the post#1) This seems strange. A vB bug?
I guess there is no failsafe to prevent users from getting confused. Another flaw arises when users just hit the post Reply button on a embedded post, when in Linear mode, (ie not Reply with Quote), and it puts their reply at end of a long thread. People read that reply post and have no clue who the poster replied to. Perfect example in the Old Pictures Sticky.
Maybe a way around this is a vB software change to ALWAYS mark a embedded Reply with the Post#/timestamp of the post being replied to. But I guess it'd have to track and modify the post#/timestamp as more replies happen on previous posts. Well, maybe not such a good idea.
