Re: Reading Post Problems - Am I the Only One

John, Yes I think I follow all the methods and their results, but I just did some more experiments in the Test forum. Here

When I use the Reply or Reply with Quote button(bottom of the post, Not Top/Bottom "+Reply to Thread"), in Hybrid mode after Submit it puts it right after that post, embedded in the thread. Test Forum Example above replying to post#5.

Still in Thread view, I simply switch the Display to Linear mode, that same reply is now at the end of the thread. See post#6 is the reply to post#5.

If I switch back to Hybrid mode, it puts it back in the middle of the thread after post#5.

However, when I do this same operation and process on the very first post in the new thread, Post#1, it ALWAYS puts the Replies at the END of the Thread, Hybrid OR Linear using either Reply or Reply with Quote button(bottom of the post#1) This seems strange. A vB bug?

I guess there is no failsafe to prevent users from getting confused. Another flaw arises when users just hit the post Reply button on a embedded post, when in Linear mode, (ie not Reply with Quote), and it puts their reply at end of a long thread. People read that reply post and have no clue who the poster replied to. Perfect example in the Old Pictures Sticky.

Maybe a way around this is a vB software change to ALWAYS mark a embedded Reply with the Post#/timestamp of the post being replied to. But I guess it'd have to track and modify the post#/timestamp as more replies happen on previous posts. Well, maybe not such a good idea.

I think the logic of the program in Hybrid mode is correct and works the way it should. The real issue is users who don't understand the logic and naturally click on the nearest Reply button they see. I really don't know of a cure for that problem.

Test Reply. I am using the Reply to Thread for this message and it should link to your post outside the string of plain replies.

Test Reply to your Test Reply to Thread....

Mine is Reply with Quote (inside your post)

Linear Mode shows yours as the LAST post in the Thread. ( yes makes sense )

Hybrid Mode shows yours as the next post after Gary's post, which when looking at the link list at the top of Hybrid view, it is the last reply link in the chain from my original reply(post#2).

After submit I'll edit to show it's placement in the thread.

          =======
          Edit:
          As expected..
It put my reply at end of thread in Linear.
In Hybrid view it's the last reply link in the chain from my original reply(post#2).

This time I'm replying using +" (multiple Quote, but just one, yours)

But this time replying using +Reply to Thread

            Where will it go.....

            Edit:
            As expected.

In EITHER Linear or Hybrid view, it put it at the end of the thread. Even though the quoted post is embedded.

So Multiple Quote button(+") inside a post works differently from Reply or Reply with Quote.

This basically proves what I said was a workaround in my earlier post to ensure reply order is maintained when quoting someone. The reply is at the end of thread in any View.

Again a caveat is that the +" button leaves the checkmark there after submit. This to me is a vB bug without question.

I still don't know what to do with all of this information.
